Part of the problem is solved after reading this:

What I really need to know now is whether it's possible to place text captions on mosToolBar buttons the way you can with mosMenuBar buttons.  I've tried doing this, and the captions just don't show up.  Is this even possible to do?

Could anyone point me toward a tutorial on using mosToolBar on the front-end for Joomla 1.0 components?  I've already searched the forum and the web with no luck.  I've also tried to pick apart other components and replicate what they do, but so far without success.
