The venue was a little noisy - I don't know the watering holes in the city well enough to suggest any alternatives though.

I don't have a broad experience of mailing list managers but I have always found mailman dependable. http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/
Others swear by ezmlm but it requires qmail as the SMTP server http://cr.yp.to/ezmlm.html

Thanks to the organisers and presenters for an informative afternoon. As a Joomla noob I was very interested to hear about what to expect in 1.5, the issues it addresses and the direction the development team are heading in.
