The only one that has a clear beginners section on the homepage is Wordpress (did not check ALL project sites of course ;) ). See the screenshot, something like that might help the beginners a bit more. Maybe an idea to tak...

There is a limit set on editing you own posts. Between the time of posting and roughly a week you can edit it, after that you won't be able to edit it anymore. Your post is probably past that limit?

There is no bridge in place, it is running standalone. It is not running in a Joomla! wrapper as far as I know, the phpBB theme is probably tweaked to have our site menus incorporated on top. Oh and yes, running on a different mysql server/database.
