I probably found a bug. The popular module uses ItemId=1 for some content (which is not on the frontpage). Switching back to 1.0.11 it uses the correct ItemId again. I have seen not rule behind this behavior. You may see the problem on my web page m And use e.g. the popular entry "Wedding" ... Regar...
