As this happens every few weeks, always with the same error msgs, it might be a good idea to look for a more permanent solution. Just a friendly suggestion :-)

Mjaz,

If you follow the team blogs you know that people have been working on exactly that for a while. It is a very complex and challenging task indeed.

We would love nothing more than for Joomla to migrate away from the unstable system that powers Joomla Code. The problem does not lie with the servers or the hosting but with the system itself.

Unfortunately, there are no other solutions available that are viable in terms of cost etc. In the meantime when problems are reported they are resolved as soon as possible while other folks work on more permanent solutions.

If anyone has any ideas then we are all ears. I think we need to remember the improvement this system has given us over the original forge that it replaced though.

Chris,

That is for sure. :)  Joomlacode is really an amazing infrastructure.

We all appreciate what Rochen does on a daily basis to keep things humming.

Thanks Elin! :)

What makes this even more interesting is that Joomla is running the world's largest deployment of the system that powers the forge. Therefore, most of the issues that come up have never been faced before or seen by the developers of the system before. It would be great if we could just go to them and ask for a fix.

Lots of people have (and continue to) spend a lot of time working to resolve this but in particular I want to thank Sam Moffat from Joomla and Ben Johnson from our team at Rochen for there work on this. Sam and Ban have spent literally hours and hours on this and neither of them has any prior experience working on this system.

I realize it's not an easy task, so I certainly did not mean to point fingers. And I agree it's nowhere near as bad as it was on the old forge. So thanks for that :-)
It's just frustrating when my most important development tool (apart from eclipse) fails. I'm often the first one to report here, so that says something :)

One little suggestion might be to separate the file release system from the SVN, so that if one of them breaks, the other one can stay online. The only drawback is a small loss of functionality (eg atm bug reports can be linked to releases etc) but I feel that's a small price to pay.

Maybe some of the pressure could be taken from the FRS by using torrents. We could set this up for j's packages as well as some of the most downloaded extensions, make a big announcement, and make sure that users clicking 'download' on the front page are encouraged to use them.

Thoughts?

I'd be happy to help setting this up.

:(

Noticed it 2. Somehow it seems to be always when I really need something from joomlacode, and not when I'm just browsing trough some projects.
I really have a bad timing eh? :D

Ping seems to be "normal", little bit high, but working.

Code: Select all

sander@Homer:~$ ping joomlacode.org
PING joomlacode.org (70.87.155.82) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from jforge001.directrouter.com (70.87.155.82): icmp_seq=1 ttl=53 time=135 ms
64 bytes from jforge001.directrouter.com (70.87.155.82): icmp_seq=2 ttl=53 time=133 ms
64 bytes from jforge001.directrouter.com (70.87.155.82): icmp_seq=3 ttl=53 time=133 ms

Anyway, I guess it's fixed soon.

It doesn't help. The Joomlacode doesn't run on a "hosting plan", it has it's own dedicated server. If I have understand it right, it's the software combined with the immense data.

See Chris reply:

I think we all understand the necessary and the sesitiveness that joomlacode works correctly and there are many people who works to solve this issue.

Great idea on using torrents for main Joomla packages and for other popular extensions to Joomla, would greatly ease the burden and not rely on the forge when it is down for whatever reason.

Please whatever you do, please  do not go to a torrent system, some of us have ISPs who are intolerant on in torrent. :'(

Yeah they actually pipe it Down, as in "Can you say 24k modem on a good day?!"

What I would suggest (if budget allows) either cluster servers (one fails, the next rolls in), or concurrent  storage raid array, same idea. I think I noticed MySQL has a cluster version, a freebie to dot-ORGs.  I used to work in a NOC and the general rule of thumb was 3 CPU  in cluster, and or 3 disks in concurrent disk array. Fairly solid. If one failed we took a hammer to it if we felt like it while the other rolled in, the users felt a small pause, we fixed the broken set, and fired it back up - at leasure.

Well there would certainly be nothing wrong with having the choice for those of us with ISP's who do not have such policies, so a choice to use a torrent would still take off a significant amount of load. It doesn't have to be all or none on the torrent system.

Keep both options open. With torrents few users like me can share the load and keep system fast enough for non torrent users.

no no... torrents are the best solution as we don't have packages larger than 5mb even users with less bandwidth also can share it via torrent mirrors..

No you don't get it.
I like torrent, would love to use it, in the past I've used  it, but with my broadband carrier they have restricted use because they don't like it.  My carrier /ISP restricts all torrent activity, they do not approve shared torrent bandwidth over their net, therefore they allow torrent activity at 16kb to 24kb per second MAXIMUM. They almost regard torrent as another type of rogue server.

A 5mb file over torrent takes hours to download over this ISP's net. Period. When I do use torrent, it is because it is available nowhere else AND I have lot's of time to babysit the torrent which has a tendency to abort if left unattended. My ISP admin has settings, bots, and chron jobs making sure there are humans behind it and making sure that their bandwidth is well... their bandwidth.

Whereas a  normal http download I can get 128 to 256 kb per sec download speed, 5mb takes 2 -3 minutes, unattended.

I agree that torrent would be a good option to alleviate the pressure from FRS, I just have to emphasize that for some of us that is not a good option. I cannot change carriers, there are none better, so for, for me, torrent, not viable. mmm I mean really, 16kb/sec or 128/kb per second, which would you pick?

So I agree a torrent mirror would be a good option, but please please keep the old FRS!!! I am not an unhappy download person, the Joomla Team Rocks!
