Probably there is a language file where you can do that, but you could start by having a look in pagenavigation.php in /plugins/content.

It is the "Content - Pagebreak" Plugin you should look at

Not in the plugin.
Look at the article and delete the grey dotted line for page break, then make a new one and choose a correct page title

Sorry, misread the question and thought it was about changing the words 'article index'.

A related question: is it also possible to change the page title for the first page?
Below the 'Article Index' the first page carries the name of the article, and I would prefer calling it introduction or something similar. Inserting a page break at the beginning and filling in the title would leave the first page text blank.

So after you shouted that you want an answer, can you share your solution with others now?

ewel, you can change the words "Article Index" on line 173 of plugins/content/pagebreak.php.

You can change the text of the link by viewing the HTML of the article and modifying the
tags by adding an alt attribute or a title attribute. If neither an alt or title are found, it's just use the page number.

Good thing there's a 404 on that posted page -- witches scare me.  :o
