Chicago Jday

Post by DesignGuy » Tue Feb 26, 2008 5:38 am

Brad,

We were reminded in a rather official manner (though cordial), by both Alex and Louis that the term JoomlaDay is, in fact, proprietary to the Core Team/Open Source Matters. So, just whipping a "JoomlaJour" together, while it seems on the surface to be laissez-faire, isn't as simple for us Joe Joomlicans as say, a Core Team member.

So, I hope other folks take notice when they read, "go ahead and organize a JoomlaDay!" While Alex, Ryan and Louis have been cordial, in the end, none of the folks here in Chicago ever received anything in writing (a "charter," as they call it), which actually describes the "terms and conditions" (again, their terms) of said "JoomlaDay."

So, Brad, while you're doing your best to communicate a community-minded spirit, and you've BEEN part of actual "JoomlaDays" yourself, it may be actually leading folks down a path that they may not realize is a bit bumpy, shall we say, to encourage them to jump in and run one themselves. Maybe let them know they should first contact Alex, and get a written charter, defining the T & C.

It was a rather exasperating journey, actually. We have yet to receive that document, in fact...and we're less than three months away from our launch date of May 16th. We're going ahead with an alternative event, but hoping for Core Team support none the less.

Once we get the lay of the political landscape a bit better - and every organization has politics - we'll try a Take II on attempting a JoomlaDay. Maybe in the fall.

In the meantime, once we get our learning event plan together, we'll post the whole planning guide - mission, specific/measurable goals, materials list, budget & timeline, course descriptions, marketing plan / logo, name, access to use the domain, recommendations, warts and all - so other folks can try it too, and hopefully improve upon it, for the good of the Joomla! community.

PS: If anyone wants to jump in and help us with our learning event, please PM me.

Simply send Alex a message, he'll help you out and provide the charter to you. Email or PM him. If people post a new thread in the right forum, invariably, Alex will reply and contact them anyway.

Dear John,

I got a mail from Edward R. Swiderski III a while ago and asked him for one single person of contact to send the charter and other details throu - this was on the 7th of Feb this year. After that I send the charter to him and put him in contact with Ryan has his mentor for the event.

I never heard anything back other than the complains from you or the points Louis mentioned to me. If Edward didn't got the charter document due to any failure or didn't forwarded it to you I do not know. You are speaking here to the public ok that's your right. If your team has any issues Edward would be the person having my personal email contact and also a direct contact to Ryan to solve issues related to your event. Did your team decide that Edward should not be the primary contact anymore? Sorry but I can't really understand why we have this huge discussion in public with you guys while all other events all over the world are in process.

I suggest you guys talk to each other and decide who of you is our single contact to your team and then please let this person talk to us. I have no issues to send the charter document again I just want to know to whom I send it for which event so that we have a direct contact to your team.

Kind regards

Alex

PS: Send to Edward also by email

As of last Friday, Edward shared with our committee that we had not received the documents. That's why I politely suggested you post your documentation here on the Forum, to provide everyone advance information in clear terms.

Being a rather active blogger and forum participant myself, I've found that it's quite effective to publish such information, as well as discuss issues and concerns in a professional and respectful manner right here, so others can learn from our experiences.

I suggest the same advice to you, Alex. We all would be better off abiding by that suggestion.

Don't forget, your most recent correspondence did not route via our agreed upon point of contact (whom you mentioned above); it went to another one of our committee members. The saw cuts both ways.

I think we'd both prefer a kinder, smoother approach. Makes the landing far less jolting.

I have splitted this topic as it was OT vs the original thread.

Oh gee thanks for the split, my new friend. Problem I have is "O.T." are my middle initials, so I apologize in advance for a future off-topic comment I make. :)

Well, we're still excited about doing a JoomlaDay at some point down the road. Maybe in the meantime, we'll touch base with y'all to come to our April 9th or May 14th Noon Meeting in the Loop. We'll just make it a "JoomlAfternoon." All the fun and information into Half-a-Joomla-Day.

Ha! Oh, I kill me.

;)

PS: There's a Cubs home game on May 14th too...we could head there afterwards, and make it JoomlaNight at Wrigley Field. Slip a $50 bill to the grounds crew, and maybe they'll cut the Joomla logo into the field?
