Joomla.org connection slow or site not found.

Post by Apollo » Thu Mar 09, 2006 1:46 pm

Hi everybody,

Lately the connection to Joomla.org especially the forum is very slow. Often the webbrowser shows site not found. Is there a reason for this. Are there more people who have the same problem? Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, there has been trouble for a day now, people are working hard on it now to find out why it is giving trouble.

It seems that there is an abnormally high amount of traffic that has been hitting the server lately.  Normally, Apache doesn't ever reach more than 250 simultaneous connections, but recently it has been reaching as high as 650.

I wonder whether this could be related to the tweak Brad made to the index used when searching.
I reported at the time that the site felt a little slower afterwards.
The number of simultaeneous connections is probably caused by the number of sloooow loading pages and people hitting refresh on failure.

I am not sure about that, you would have to take that up with Brad.  I represent Rochen here, that is all.  Brad is the one that "holds to the keys" to this forum.

I just rebooted the server.  There were several processes that were dead but still drinking system RAM.

Things working again =)

Post by Edenapple » Thu Mar 09, 2006 3:07 pm

Joomla forum/Site was extremely sluggish for a few hours this morning (not sure if it was just me, but tried it on 2 different networks!).

Glad to see everything A-OK again!  Was gettin' twitchy without my Joomla fix! lol

The System Admins are aware of the issue. There are working hard to resolve it while still keeping the boards up.

I'm not sure... I'm not an admin. The admins do watch this board pretty closely, so they might pop in and give us some insight. Then again, they are really busy right now, so they might not. Either way, they have our best interests in mind.

The problem is not related to just the forum. All sites, except the forge, are having the same issues. Work is being done to sort out the problem, and to try and get things back on full speed as soon as possible.

We have been working closely with the core team over the past 24 hours or so on this very matter. We have been seeing large traffic spikes which are slowing the site down a bit, but we don’t believe this traffic is legitimate. A lot of it appears to be bots trying to post comment SPAM on the blog and search engine spiders hammering the site as part of Google’s latest deep crawl. There was also a configuration issue with the new Extensions site which was affecting the way it was handling 404 responses, which has now been fixed. This obviously affects the way the site responds to search engine spiders etc.

Like I said, we are working with the core team to resolve this matter as quickly as possible, but when you have a site which receives the volume of traffic Joomla does (over 60 million hits per month) then it is often difficult to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate requests. I am going to be discussing this issue in more detail with some other members of the core team later this evening.

Many would have simply stepped back and left the site down until this matter worked itself out. However, we have been fighting this issue from every angle to at least try and keep the site and forum as usable as possible for you all. We have had staff monitoring this matter around the clock since yesterday.

Thank you for your continued support of the project and please be ensured that a lot of people are working to resolve this as soon as humanely possible.

The "Humor, Fun and Games" forum has  more than 2500 Posts, so why not build a "Humor, Fun and Games Working" Group?

We have doubled the server RAM from 2GB to 4GB. Let’s see how things hold up… :)

Thanks for the kind words, Shayne. You folks do the hard work running the project. I am just glad we can contribute in someway.

We will continue to monitor things and see how it holds up after the RAM upgrade.

The last days I am having the same problems with SOME of my sites which were also becoming terrible slow.

Finally found the problem. The Google Analytics mambot, altough not enabled, was causing this problem.
I have removed the mambot and all is back OK now.

in these days the google analytics service has gone down... I've seen the problem also in some Italian sites    but I don't think that this is the Joomla.org problem

I am facing a lot of issues with the forum, it is a bit of sluggish right now,

This has been happening since the last 1 hour,

First says that,

SMF cannot connect to database possibly too many connections or something like that,

Then on FF it says that

Server at Joomla.org is taking too long to respond etc,

All these problems do not occur after a refresh or two

Just thought of letting you know

I am in India if anyone needs to know..

It should be ok now.

Please note that this server is processing somewhere around 1500 requests with around 75 requests a second, a lot more than it has in the past.  Already it has used 4 GB of system RAM and is using 1.9 GB of swap.

Tom,
Can I ask what is the solution for this problem,
ask we can see the traffic will increase, not decrease in the forums and Joomla.org

Is more RAM the soln, or a total server upgrade is needed.

Cheers
