Re: New slogan

Post by jdg » Sun Sep 04, 2005 6:45 pm

I was hoping the discussion Hannelore, Tyndal and I started would result in good new suggestions for a slogan; well thought over and to the point.

Guess I was hoping for too much then as we're gradually falling back to the "Joomla! Easy as 1,2,3 CMS" type of slogan propositions, or worse: "Joomla! Power of togetherness". Sounds like "Embarasment by shamelessness", "The letter 'n' in sillyness"... I'm not a native English speaker myself either but I got this hunch that "Power of togetherness" isn't correct English either.

And I don't want to be particularly picky or anything, but a slogan like "it CAN be that easy"..... Well I just don't know.... How easy is this easy of you? Compared to what? Compared to dismantling a nuclear powerplant or compared to eating french fries? And what prerequisites are there for 'it' being that easy? 3 university grades + at least 1 "professor" title or just three weeks of primary education?

"Joomla! Whatever you want".. Yeah, off course, whatever you want man...
Don't get me wrong, I understand the author's intention and it initially is a good one in the basis, but this is just not a good slogan. It's similar to "Joomla! See if we care". "Joomla! la la la"; the bigger you write it, the ... let's write the Joomla! anthem first, shall we?

As said, I'm not a native English speaker, but even people who speak English worse than I do surely must feel these slogans don't cut it. Even they should have some feeling when they look at. Hence the discussion before...

I'm sorry, I don't want to offend anyone. I was just hoping the discussion would become a bit more mature and would start to produce results. Thought the humour zone was there not for not...

I think I'll just go with Hannelore: No slogan. And if we must have a slogan my vote goes to: "Joomla! Silly name, serious CMS", at least not as bad as many others... and I'm out of this thread... I think... I might be starting to offend more people than I would like if I rattle on (my max. is at 1 per year ;) )

Hi!

I understand that a slogan is better if it doesn't exist! I know translation problem as I suggested posts ago. Your idea is very clear but a lot of joomlers seem to me wanting a good one.

A "simple and fast CMS" or similar might be ok.

Personnaly I like a simple logo with no slogan, but I think a poll should be useful. And the first question MUST be, slogan or not??????

Do you agree?

The problem is that 3,500 of us have been invited to suggest ideas for a logo and a slogan and that is creating such a large number of replies that the best suggestion may have been passed over already ... or may even yet to be suggested.

I hadn't considered the notion of having no slogan but given the choice of name being as international as possible it is my hope that a strong logo can be produced and that a slogan is deemed unnecessary.

We'll see.  :)

That's the old Mambo slogan... probably Trademarked by Miro as well...

I reckon Lester is right about getting 3,500+ opinions aligned; virtually impossible..

I have a simple question.
There are many suggestions for a slogan now.

Who has to decide?

Will there be a poll, or will the core team decide, or is there one  person who decides?

:)

This is just my own little insignificant opinion, but coming from a copywriting/marketing background (minored in copywriting, majored in systems analysis, became a graphic designer - go figure) :

I think in looking at a slogan, it should appeal to what we envision Joomla to BE, rather than where it's come from or what it's gone through to get to this point.  The whole purpose of this excercise is ro RE-BRAND what the Core team's worked on, and what they've given us.  With a new name, and a soon-to-be new logo, in place we should be looking to the future, and not harping on the past.

We ALL know that Joomla is the same award-winning CMS we all grew to love - why attach a stigma to it by trying to harp on the past few weeks?  We have a fresh look at the project now, and a reinvigorated approach to the project's future - near and distant.  So why not form a (for lack of a better term) corporate identity that reflects that?

I'm sure the marketing package that is being developed will describe how we came about to using the word "Joomla" to begin with - but it's not the aspect that will get new users (or those who have migrated away from the project) interested enough to even read it.  It's how the CMS as a whole is portrayed...

When I was copywriting, there was an old saying of "less is more". I'll be the first to admit I don't take my own advice at times, but it's true, isn't it?

The two I came up with are directly related to the logos backing them:

"Set Your Sites On It!"  and  "Soaring To New Sites!"

It describes what the project has to do with without using the term CMS, and it generates interest because the negative stigmas of the past few weeks relating to the project and whatever "feud" there is with Miro are not present.  THAT'S probably the approach we should be going for - especially if we want to BUILD on our community and not just keep what we already have.

Just my insignificant opinion, like I said....

I think your heading towards the right track Dave.  Many of the slogans is saying how good Joomla! is as though Joomla is full of its own self importance or smug with it's own clever slogan [please - just trying to illustrate a point - not saying it is so].

We all know how good it is & can be: worthy but misses the point 'cause we're already using it.  The slogan needs to be talking directly to those who are not using Joomla!

A slogan needs to motivate a webmaster to install, trial & use Joomla!  The key is to directly challenge that webmaster be using personalised words.  Words like "you", "your", "I" etc are very powerful.  To give some examples "iPod" - "I'm lovin' it"  - "My Source". Do a quick google on +marketing +"personal pronouns" http://tinyurl.com/acmpl.

So challenge the Joomla! newbie.  Make 'em feel that they might be missing something great if they skip over Joomla!.  There are many 'Powerful CMS', 'Easy CMS'.  How many CMS' do-what-you-want the way-you-want?  So make it personal as Dave says "Set Your Sites On It!" {My Benefit:...ah! so I can use Joomla! to make websites... sweet!}  or "Your Site Your Way"  {My Benefit:...Cool! It must be really flexible unlike all the other CMS'... sweet!}

I'm with you although it might seem to you I'm telling just nonsense.
I thought I had expressed my ideas clearly, but I was wrong, apparently.
On the other hand I'm not in a hurry to stop been a newbie here (you need 50 posts for that).

I omitted the end of my explanation which would be:
When learning about Joomla, the potential user could say something like "It can't be that easy to manage a website's content". To what the slogan replies: "It CAN" and "it is" with Joomla.

In this context, you don't have to think a lot to find answers to your questions:
  • How easy is this easy of you? As easy as Joomla makes it.
  • Compared to what? Compared to any other CMS.
  • Compared to dismantling a nuclear powerplant or compared to eating french fries? Compared to using any other CMS.
  • And what prerequisites are there for 'it' being that easy? 3 university grades + at least 1 "professor" title or just three weeks of primary education? You can answer this one by yourself.

The rest of my reasons are explained at http://forum.opensourcematters.org/inde ... l#msg29417

Neither do I, but it seems that the OSM forums are by far less serious than the old $amboserver's ones. And I wonder why...

Joomla!
...take IT to new heights.

You can take IT to new heights, in the sense that you are going to join a huge community that works together for the good of the project.

at the same time ,joomla! comes with some many components and tools that it is you who can take it (joomla!) to new frontiers. Go crazy and develop new and better sites with the ease provided by joomla!.

my 2 centavos.

In english is ok but translating all that is... impossible! Please if you like slogans take into account translating problems: your text have to be more simplier, clearer and so on. We have to be multi-language, this CMS has to be "adopted" all over the world! ;)

Agreed! I like my own suggestion "Publishing for People" (of course)

It encorporates the concept of having something that is easy to work with, but maybe not so much the possibilities that Joomla gives you.
