Components developed specifically for the non-profit community

Post by cozimek » Mon Sep 19, 2005 3:26 am

With the Joomlaforge is in its early days, I thought it would be good to collect any components that individuals have made specifically for the non-profit sector.  If you know of any CMTs that are non-profit-centric, please post here.  We'll use this to provide a resource to the non-profit community when they're making decisions as to what they need to get their Joomla site off the ground.

Best,
Ryan

The 2checkout one doesn't work, the link has been taken down, and based on the notes, its only for the version 1 ipn which means it won't work anyway.  The pay pal I tried is akodonate, which looks terrbile!!

There must be at least a decent paypal donate module somewhere out there!

In Portland several non-profits are using CivicSpace  http://civicspacelabs.org/home/civicspa ... ures      I am working with several NPOs and now that Joomla is "official" will be working on converting them off of CivicSpace.

This is not an existing component, but one that I would DEARLY like to create. I need to learn how to do that, however, so it will be a long time. I would like to develop/modify a classifieds add component specifically for animal rescue organizationsto allow them to list their animals and run their shelters/foster homes. It would be a fairly large component inthat it needs a lot of fields for each animal. It needs private fields and ones that are visible on the listings, as well as several related tables. Examples are: medical records, foster/locations, etc. The key functionality is that multiple people need to be able to manage the animals they are in charge of.

Long story short, there are several expensive programs that offer this and I would very much like to support non-profits for free with Joomla!.

Braindump! lets move this forward!

Post by grant » Tue Sep 20, 2005 12:39 am

I think that that is a great idea.  I am sure that there are a lot of us out here that are working in this space and see the potential available, with JOOM.  There are a lot of things that are similar in functionality that would apply accross the whole board of NPO and there are a lot of existing components etc that need a small tweak or two to become "killer apps" for NPOs.

Its really great that we have a core member who has an NPO background, which I am sure he would be able to influence a lot, however there are a lot of actions we could be doing to encourage more cooperation between us.  I suggest we create a Braindump of Ideas on how we can cooperate between us, share best practice etc.

- To get the ball rolling heres my Braindump:
- Central store of Donations Providors that WORK with JOOMLA
- Central store of Best Practice for NPO website
- Case Studies of things that worked really well and raised lots of Dosh(including details of components used.
- List of features we would like to see in Joomla in the future to help NPOs, written down and submitted to JOOM team.
- Open list of project ideas whcih developers who are looking for ideas can develope further
- Open list of existing projects that require customisation to be appropriate for NPos that developers can refer to if they wish to help out the NPO sector.
- Creation of list of Developers and Companies that offer discount services to NPOs.  3

- YOUR IDEA GOES HERE

Ideas for projects:
- Integration of donation providors into Mambo Modules
-
- YOUR IDEA GOES HERE

I will be willing to devote some time to furthering this particular important avenue and would welcome the chance to speak to others who feel the same way.

Regards

Grant

I know about the prayer component, located here:

I posted a separate message about an ordering component. Sorry I did see this thread of posts only later. ???

CiviCRM has a version working on Mambo/Joomla. CiviCRM is a non-profit constiutent relationship management system. We currently have a pretty fully featured contact management solution and released v1.1 a few weeks ago. We also jut released CiviMail, a high performance mass mailing engine for CiviCRM. Coming soon are modules like CiviDonate and CiviMember (member management)

we have a pretty active community, mailing list and web site. more information and links below

you can find installation instructions here:

http://objectledge.org/confluence/displ ... tion+Guide

The wiki has a fair amount of information regarding feature set etc

http://objectledge.org/confluence/display/CRM/Home

You can play with the sandbox at:

http://demo.openngo.org/civicrm/drupal-php5/

You can join this mailing list at:

Civicrm has a lot of potential, but many of the proposed developments, such as a donation page, don't seem fully functional yet. I'm really looking forward to working with it. It was a breeze to import a list of contacts, though getting their addresses in has proved more challenging.

I think you probably could use phpshop to let someone do a donation, though. Why not? Assuming you have the processing capability.

I am working on a non-profit site for the dogs. http://www.asdsingapore.com/index.php

I have been looking for a component where I can create a catalogue entry component either on the front or backend for the volunteers to enter the data of the dogs to be adopted. http://www.asdsingapore.com/index.php?o ... &Itemid=60
Currently I am using wrapper to wrap the old script written by one of the volunteer last time. BUt in time to come, I hope I can have a component to choose the preset the fields and define if I want it to be filtered using a drop down.

What do you guys think ?

You can get classifieds 1.4 at http://support.gorsk.net/ - right hand side of the screen if you can't read Russian.

I personally am holding out high hopes for civiCRM as a back end membership database management system, using Community Builder at the front end for my Membership needs. This all depends on the CB api coming to fruition soon....

Gareth,

Well, youll be happy to know that we're working closely with the CB team to use their API to have the CiviCRM backend more fully functional with the front end.  We'll be keeping everyone posted as things progress.

Best,
Ryan

mcsmom,

You're right regarding the donations packages.  The team is working as quickly as possible to do both email blasting and donations processing, but as you can imagine applications like this take time to develop.  I'd give the CiviCRM team another few months and have a very fully functioning email and donations engine connected to CiviCRM.  Keep checking into their web site at http://www.openngo.org to learn more, and we'll make sure to post more integration news here.

Best,
Ryan

Downloaded this... not really what i am looking at. I need a component that i can classified the fields for content entry and if we can sort.. i.e.

1. back end i can create a new field gender of dogs.. on front end i can create drop down to sort by female dogs and male dogs..
2. Back end i can classified age of dogs, 1 mth - 5 mths, 6 mths - 1 year old ... on front end i can create drop down to sort this value.

I am happy to scope the project if need to. What do you guys think?

That's great news.

Let me tell you what I have cobbled together right now:
joomla with CB for registration. community functions, information requests etc. as well as managing the public site.
a totally separate phpauction for running our auction in October (I am pretty sure I could theoretically integrate this, but I don't have the time right now).
A separate link to missionfish and one to network for good for donations.
a totally separate small eTapestry system, which I try to keep under 500 records, for managing donors to our parent events
the school manages its internal, larger database with FileMake on their intranet.

This is a nightmare, even with me willing to import direct to sql. This is one reason I LOVED the import interface on CivicRM, it was so easy to use for the most part, except for some problems I posted about over there.

Auctions, pet adoptions, scheduling people to work at rummage sales, these are all the kinds of things that small NPOs need to be able to let volunteers do, preferrably from the front end.

You mention Scheduling Volunteers - that sparked a huge interest for me.

I currently have set up 2 joomla sites for non profit organizations - Each has a strong need to schedule volunteer activities for several committees

Each Committee draws from the same volunteer pool, many volunteers work for several committees, many committees have concurrent functions that need to be staffed

It would be an awesome component if the volunteer coordinator could log in and view summaries of events needing volunteers and lists of compatible (matched by skills and willingness selectors) available volunteers for the days those events are happening.

Once they were booked in by the coordinator an email would be sent or a message that the volunteer needs to be called,  would  pop up to notify them to confirm the booking

Then of course each volunteer could view their commitments via the joomla site.

Volunteers could send a request to trade time commitments to the coordinator

You can do the following with CiviCRM v1.1/v1.2 (coming this weekend). However our joomla integration is currently only at the backend. we are looking for volunteers to help us make a joomla front end component for scenarios like the above.

New thought about a "want...."

I haven't switched our site (www.sipforum.org) to Joomla! yet (it's still M4.5.2).  We've done a bunch of custom development on that site to meet the needs of our industry forum, so it's not simple to switch without some serious planning.

One of the things we did was add some software so that a user who registered on the site is automatically added to the Forum's email mailing list.  Our mailing lists are run using Mailman.  Yes, I know Mailman is not PHP.  Yes, I know there are PHP-based mailing list managers out there (and they're not very good, IMHO.)  Yes, I know Mailman is not integrated with Mambo/Joomla!  But Mailman is simply the best large-scale open source email list software out there, and I'm not going to give up on that.  (Our list is generally 10,000+ users, and it works like a champ.)

So what I'd like is tight linkage between Mailman and Joomla!  The thing we did is a hack; it didn't really "link" the two, so I wouldn't really feel good about contributing it.

But this isn't *terribly* hard to do; most everything one would want to do in Mailman is available via a command line interface at Joomla! could leverage.  And there's recently been some work to make all the HTML in Mailman's web UI more CSS-driven (which matches the Joomla! direction).

The ideal result would be to make everything that's available in Mailman's own web interface available from within Joomla!  A lesser goal is reasonble:  make sure the page for end-user-self-administration is present in Joomla! (including initial subscription, preference changes, password recovery, etc.), and then leave the "back end" administration web pages as-is (stand-alone) in Mailman.  Most Mailman admins wouldn't gripe about this.  Config is a little tricky, since both things live in pretty different areas of the filesystem normally, and user/group permissions on files need thought.

This is probably a big "want"; but you asked what we want.... :-)

One thing we *did* do that we could consider giving to the community if people thought it was useful (though I doubt people will):  we created some code that goes and snarfs IETF draft information (titles, abstracts, last-modified dates, ...) out of the IETF website, and puts them on an automatically generated page.  This was useful to us because there is a TON of SIP-related work going on, and this is a good service to our member community.  I don't know how many other non-profits need this type of code.... :-)

People seized on the word "classified" in your description, not "catalog."
There are a number of M/J components that could be modified to meet your needs. Probably mambo-phpshop (with the billing part disabled) is going to get you where you want to go.

You might also look into mosDirectory, though it's not clear to me whether it will be upgraded to Joomla.

Best of luck.

Since Mailman is the best service, I was *glad* to hear you ahve something to work between joomal/mambo and mailman.
can you still *contribute* something about it?

For classifieds, I like the new Noah component (Noah's Classifieds) and it's available on JoomlaForge.

I can find the link but there is a new component that allows you to assign different views of registered content depending on your profile. I plan on using it eventually to offer some registered content to artists that I won't offer to registered art fans. The person here with volunteers could use it to accomplish their task.

I'm pretty sure it's in the Components postings in the last 3 days. Sorry I can't be more specific. What we're really talking about is a login tied to an ACL list - or personalization, depending on which Web language you use.

This is way too vague but my challenges is promotion and especially participation on the Web. I have Web sections (like wikis) that require participation to develop and justify themselves.

This may be old school but a component to create and run a site tour would be great. It highlights the org's mission while explaining how to use the site and what the site offers. Someone I know who runs a huge site is creating "profiles" of site vistors to benchmark his content staff's production against. This component could run a site survey with admin input of further data and then produce profiles to shape content creation, fundraising efforts on the site, plus promotion and ACL lists for what registered users see on the site. So as you can see my concerns are focused around understanding the visitors, attracting the visitors, encouraging visitor participation on the site, and showing them personalized content. All meant to increase buy-in and offer them the most relevant and focused Web experience so they will continue to participate.

Oooops. Just wandered too close to the reality distortion beam in fantasyland.

Hi guys.  I'm not cross-posting to cause dramas here, but I have a new topic regarding a fundraising component I have developed that may be of interest to you.  This could possibly be of use within the non-profit community.
