Somewhere in the week of 21-26th Jan 2007 I'll be in Melbourne and a few others have privately expressed the desire to get together for a coffee and a chat etc etc
If you are interested in attending, please reply so we can gather numbers and find a suitable venue.
Edit: Date is decided: 24th Jan 2007

Re: Melbourne, Australia Meetup 21-26th Jan 2007
Gonna have to plan a family vacation around something like this but that is too early for me to get a vacation planned. Maybe in the Spring or Summer.

Planning for somewhere in the CBD at the moment, but I don't think an exact location has been decided on.

@ Tonie... Xmas day or 25th January.
I live 400km's south of Perth but its on the way to Melbourne so if I do that trip then I would be in Perth at some point around the 25th.

As a complete newbie - I'd feel way intimidated to meet all you experts - but would love to come. Perhaps Australia Day (26th) would be a good option so people don't have to get out of work?

Re: Melbourne, Australia - Joomladay 23-26th Jan 2007
I guess it depends on the numbers and what you were after. I was in the city on Anzac Day this year and heaps of cafes were open. There is also likely to be events and activities taking place to celebrate the day.
Re: Melbourne, Australia - Joomladay 23-26th Jan 2007
Can we not make is Australia Day, I'm sure some people would go away and be celebrating the day.
I'm sure after work 5pm most people would be able to meet in a central spot.
PS. a little intimidated about meeting the experts myself, being a template designer at best.

Experts.. pfftt.. hope you are not talking about me..
I'd prefer to have it NOT Australia Day myself though.. was planning a 3pm start.. of course would probably end up running past 5pm though, dunno.. at the moment, just a show of hands so we can do some planning, gather numbers etc.

Not Australia Day is good too - count me in subject to getting away from work (should be okay).

Re: Melbourne, Australia - Joomladay 23-26th Jan 2007
Joomla meeting in Melb sounds great I would certainly come along and I think a few other colleagues would come as well
Not sure what we all want to do or numbers attending but 3 quick ideas for a venue (just to stimulate discussion) are
Horse Bazaar digital bar in the city is geek friendly, serves drinks and has free net access but could be noisy/smoky later as people come for after work drinks
The Melbourne Community Wireless group meets at Hawthorn scout hall. The scouts are happy usually to provide a venue at a very modest cost and it is a good sized space for groups of 20 to even 50 and may have net access now (I can do research) pros and cons are it is better for most Melb population eg the person working in Scoresby as it is a bit east of the city but it would be a 15 min train ride out of the city for honoured visitors on Public transport. It is adjacent to Auburn station and has reasonable (but strictly enforced) parking during the day for anyone arriving by car
When I was looking around for the Melb Wireless venue Coburg library was a really good contender as it had great spaces available even from memory for larger groups and it was free and I'd assume net access would be possible. But it is aggain a bit out of the city 20 mins?
anyway just to ge the discussion going if we get a bit more of an idea of number s and what peole would want to do then I 'd be delighted to do some venue research

Re: Melbourne, Australia - Joomladay 23-26th Jan 2007
I was figuring it was just a friendly group get together, so a simple coffee shop with enough room for the proposed numbers was the go, but i could be wrong (I often am, according to Wizzie )
hey are we going to meet some experts?!?
Only thing to be intimidated by might be the Melbourne Taxi-Drivers, Trams and Hook-Turns if you're not used to them.!!
Evening would be better for me to be honest, I am working about 1/2 hour out of the CBD in the Eastern Suburbs on that week, so lunchtime would be tough to make.

No worries just got a bit keen!d I wonder if people are likely to be driving or on public transport and coming from what sort of distances?
I'm in Blackburn (30 min east of Melb) and would usually train it into the CBD or inner east but would drive anywhere else

I'd be driving, I leave way over 45 minutes West but am working 30 minutes East on that day.
Brad.. If you need a lift in to town and its going to be evening, email/skype me and we can sort something out. If I remember rightly, you are going to be out East for that week, I am working in Scoresby Village on FernTree Gully Road.

CBD is always a good option - plenty of places of all types available. Fed Square is handy to public transport and has about a bunch of eating places... and is also close to a whole bunch of other places.
