Re: Discussion about: Joomla! Brand Guide & Logo Usage Released
Is this logo going to be distributed with Joomla itself? Because the license conditions just seem to be entirely wrong in that case.

Re: Discussion about: Joomla! Brand Guide & Logo Usage Released
That is a great info pack. Thanks for all the effort that has been put into this.
I know that many people may be frustrated at not being allowed to ammend the logo to their own purposes, but I definately think that it is the right thing to do. This will help to create a very strong brand for the cms and not have the identity of joomla mixed up with the identity of companies which provide services utilising it.
I think that it is important to make the distinction, even when a company is solely providing joomla services.
I know that in the opensource world, we are used to taking something and moulding it for our own purposes, but I think that a srtict branding policy is the right thing for the project.
We have been given a wide range of logos that we may proudly use within our sites and I hope that everyone will adhere to the manual.
Thanks again to the logo team

Re: Discussion about: Joomla! Brand Guide & Logo Usage Released
Hello just a small suggestion I saw the various variations of the logo on the "Brand Guide" http://www.joomla.org/content/view/259/70/. You guys missed out one of the most popular dimesions for the logo variations. I personally like them since they are small and occupy less space. Typo3, Drupal, wordpress etc have them. An official one from Joomla would be nice. For more details on the dimensions and logos go here http://www.zwahlendesign.ch/en/node/19
Edit: Just included the picture for the dimensions. For more details on the dimensions and logos go here http://www.zwahlendesign.ch/en/node/19

These mini logos are very popular these days so it may be worth the logo team looking into this. Better to cover the most common applications otherwise people may be tempted to open the image editing package....

I think the logo looks pretty darn good. Nice to see how everything is coming together.
One idea for you, the logo should be clickable link to the Main or Forum home of the site.

first of all ... want to thank the guys for the finalization of the logo
and yes i also agree with bluesaze for the mini logo version ... it will be really handy for sites who want simple and not too graphic intense designs.
cheers!

Yes I like the fact people can't change the logo itself or add anything to it. I believe this will make it stronger. I believe thats what happened to the Mambo logo. everyone changed it and it got watered down.

Re: Discussion about: Joomla! Brand Guide & Logo Usage Released
Been away from the site for a couple of days so was delighted when I logged on this morning to see the new logo in place. The whole site is looking very professional now. I was particularly pleased to see the slogan. (http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,3090.msg26052.html#msg26052)
I think the decision not to allow people to change the logo is a correct one and sincerely hope that people respect the decision. A strong bran identity is going to play a big part in the future success of Joomla!
I also agree with bluesaze that it would be nice to have some of the "trendy" buttons available as there seem to be de rigeur these days. I don't use them very much myself but it would be better to have an official version than an unofficial one.
Once again a big thank you and congratulations to all involved in the design of the logo - including the unlucky entrants who did not make the final design. The standard throughout has been very high indeed.

Thanks for all the great comments so far, couple of things that have been brought up:
1) Mini Icons - Yes we will have mini icons available for download also - I am going to start a thread to get user submissions for these icons as the community has done such a fantastic job so far on logo/slogan etc.
2) Favicon.ico - Yes I have this, but it was very late last night and forget to put it up. I will make this availalble also.

Re: Discussion about: Joomla! Brand Guide & Logo Usage Released
Translation of the 4 main usage points and link to manual posted on french forums: http://www.mambofacile.com/forum/showth ... 2#post1097
(never mind the $ambo in the url, it's in the works.. )
Any hints as to
1. is it ok to provide localised versions of the manual, and if so, access to the Word (or OpenOffice) document?
2. could you clarify the difference between "graphic element or imagery" and "art element" (manual page 10) please? I do not speak legal speak..
3. can the measures on page 11 be provided in some other unit than "inch" which is not used this side of the ocean and design generally? like pix for example..?
4. beginning of page 17 would better read "Consistent presentation of our logo..."
5. page 18: Logo dont's: if it can't be "screened/tinted" (I'd have used faded..), it can't be used as page backgrounds?
Very nice and professional PDF!
PS (forgot one):
6. is "...because open source matters" the official new slogan? nothing about that anywhere, or did I miss this?
If yes, can it be localized/translated? Do translations have to be approved by any legal entity before usage?
thx

Some good points here, let me answer a few:
1) We want to make sure the manual is pretty solid and final before we get into providing localized copies of it. Your next few points add credence to this thinking as we don't want to be worried about making changes in lots of translated copies.
2) I have my interpretation of this but will confirm with Alan on his wording and get back to you.
3) Yes, we intended to put other unit's but it that change was forgotten. We will make sure it's added.
5) Tinted is more broad covers colorizing/fading etc.
6) You should see something about the slogan soon. it's very hard to time all these things when they are so interrelated.

the logo looks a lot better than i had imagined. very nice
Re: Discussion about: Joomla! Brand Guide & Logo Usage Released
Just some observations about the rationale for having a brand manual and set of rules in using the logo:
In the world of trademarks, the courts have said that it is the responsibility of the brand holder to set up distinct rules about the trademark's usage and then to vigorously defend those rules. In the United States, the two most cited trademark problems are Kleenex and Xerox. Many in the vernacular might write, "LOL: Hand me a kleenex, I need to wipe the tears from my eyes." The Kimberly-Clark company, owner of the brand, would exhort you to write, "LOL: Hand me a Kleenex-brand facial tissue, I need to wipe the tears from my eyes." Kleenex has become a generic word for facile tissue. While it can't police everyday speech, just ask a publisher how often they hear from Kimberly-Clark's trademark enforcement group about the misuse of their brand name.
The same with Xerox: they don't want you to write, "I needed 10 copies, so I xeroxed them"; they want "I needed 10 copies, so I made them on a Xerox-brand photocopier." Same deal with Xerox's lawyers sending warning letters to publishers.
Now these letters from Kimberly Clark and Xerox don't mean they're going to sue you. What it does mean though, is that when the Canon company (or any other photocopier maker) puts in an ad, "Make your xerox copies on a Canon -- it's cheaper and better," Xerox can haul them into court and force them into stopping the ad -- and here's the important part -- because Xerox has vigorously defended its trademark, which it demonstrates by hundreds (or thousands) of letters to publishers telling them to stop using Xerox as a generic name or -- heaven forbid -- a verb.
In the Open Source world -- where we all agree that we all share the code, anybody and everybody can have it and use it any way they want, except to resell it as their own brand -- the only thing of any tangible value is the brand name (and in the United States, anyway, that is carried on the books only as "goodwill," a non-tangible asset).
The Joomla logo, logotype and slogan are the main assets of the Open Source Matters Foundation. The license to use those assets has been developed to prevent a situation like the one we just went through. For example, let's take a hypothetical company called Orim -- it decides to remarket Joomla with ASP and support services. The Orim folks put on their web site, "We're the true and only makers of Joomla -- those Open Source guys are full of bull. Get your Orim Joomla here -- don't buy it from anybody else and for goodness sakes, don't try to install it yourself -- your hair and teeth will all fall out."
At this juncture, the Open Source Matters Foundation can haul Orim into court (in Orim's jurisdiction) and make them stop -- and, perhaps even compensate OSMF for its troubles (certainly legal fees, if not punitive damages).
As part of its defense, OSMF is going to submit as Exhibit A the latest edition of the Joomla Brand Manual. So the document -- and following its rules precisely -- benefits the entire community, because we all share in the purity of the Joomla trademark.
Not altering the Joomla logo is your way of supporting the Open Source community in general and the OSMF/Joomla community specifically.
Don't hassle the Core Team about the rules -- they're in place to make Joomla (and by extension, you) more successful.
\dmc
PS: I just ran this note through the forum's spell checker and it flagged "kleenex" with a lower-case "k." It didn't flag xexrox, though. ;-) ...

Good post. Some very good points well presented and also very informative.
Now, to try and think of a sentence with the word Joomla! as a verb.

dmc, please allow me to translate and repost some of these points on the french forums at $ambofacile.com, as some of our users were starting to ask things like "who is more restrictive, Miro or OSM", no freedom at all, why all this legal stuff etc etc, and this would help to clear some points..?
