OSCMS Summit in Sunnyvale, California March 22-23rd (Free to attend!)
Will Joomla! be at the Open Source Content Management System Summit March 22-23rd in Sunnyvale, California? I saw the summit listed on the Joomla! Google calendar, but I don't see Joomla! defined as a participating project, yet. The call for sessions ends this Friday, February 16, 2007. It appears that the sessions are to last either one or two hours.
Thus far, Alfresco, Cozmos, Drupal and Eclipse plan attendance and there are 120 or so, registered thus far. It sounds like the audience is primarily developer types - it's not billed as an "end-user" conference.
Hopefully, this will be an annual event and we can promote broader community involvement. Drupal has a couple of Adjunct events planned and it could be an ideal time for people from this continent, at least, to meet up and share ideas on Joomla!. As we "get older" those types of gatherings will be better attended, I am certain!
I am confident that Joomla! sessions will be very popular even without a large Joomla! developer crowd in attendance. It will be a great opportunity to meet other like minded open source people from other projects. Of course, we can't do everything, though, but I do hope someone from Joomla! core and/or developer team is able to attend for Joomla! and even perhaps to present an "Overview of Joomla! v 1.5" and/or a session on "Joomla!'s MVC application architecture." (If you do, think VIDEO!)
Also, any Joomla! faithful living nearby Sunnyvale, California, please consider attending this free event sponsored by Yahoo. It looks like the start of something very good.

I just noticed Hagen Graf is signed up as a conference attendee. Perhaps he might be convinced to provide an hour overview of Joomla!? I bet he would! Hagen's cool and his book rocks! I shall send him a request.

We are on it already Amy.
As this is primarily a developer summit Wilco is in charge and we focus on getting the development team over there. We have already established contact and are approved to join the event. More news as soon as we have all details together.

Re: OSCMS Summit in Sunnyvale, California March 22-23rd (Free to attend!)
Excellent news, Alex!
We might also encourage our developer community members to attend, as well. That way, if there's a big rumble between the Drupal and Joomla! camps, our core devs got some backup. (I only say that because Dries made that comment kiddingly earlier in our forums.)
But, I am not kidding about encouraging our developer community members to attend. What a great opportunity to meet up and share ideas and learn from one another. It's only a month away, now, so travel plans might be difficult. If it goes well, developers might plan on next year and get this event to grow.
I figured you were on it. Thanks so much for all you do, Alex. It is much appreciated.

First of all, let's not be naive. There are going to be dozens, if not a hundred, or so, of those dudes sporting a blue drop gang sign. So, we have to send reinforcements with you. You just keep doing what you do best. But, listen to Brian, we probably don't need quite so much information.
We got your back IF you get into trouble. You are not alone. You've got an entire community behind you.

Re: OSCMS Summit in Sunnyvale, California March 22-23rd (Free to attend!)
LOL
Contrary to popular belief the Drupal guys and gals are not hostile towards us and we are not hostile towards them.... We actually have quite friendly relationships with the Drupal devs we know. I personally look forward to meeting more Drupal developers and am quite open to discussing ideas.
The only hostility I have seen regarding these two projects stems from blog post comments and a general misunderstanding of the culture and goals of the two projects. We are both working to achieve similar goals, just in different ways.
Let us not forget that Drupal will not be the only other project there... we are going to this event to look for ways to help each other and discuss how we can each improve the projects that we work on.
I greatly appreciate the support of our community and hope that many of you can show up, but I don't think we have to bring our switchblades .. there will be no Jets and Sharks ... just open source developers

Re: OSCMS Summit in Sunnyvale, California March 22-23rd (Free to attend!)
Well, ok, but my story would have likely drawn more participants.
Actually, Louis, I have met several GREAT Drupal community members because of blogging. In one exchange, Barrie North's documentation and your FTP work was celebrated by many in Drupal and, as a result, you will likely be a Drupal 6.0 contributor. So, thanks and congrats on that!
Also, some of us from several open source projects are working together on a couple of neat open source celebratory websites that I hope will be very cool for the broader open source movement. So, you are right, as it turns out, there are some very cool people in Drupal and other open source projects, too. We seem to attract the best people.
Thanks for everything, Louis.
Amy
Edit - replaced bad link with a good one!

Hagen -
Thanks so much for presenting Joomla! at the OSCMS in California! And thank you for your "Building Websites with Joomla!" book, too!
It would be great to have some of our other third party developer types presenting, as well. There is so much that can be shared. One topic that would be very interesting would be to share our new OpenID authentication, or LDAP methods. I know all of the CMSs are facing those challenges, as well.
Thanks so much, Hagen! Great to "see" you here, too!
Take care!

Re: OSCMS Summit in Sunnyvale, California March 22-23rd (Free to attend!)
Just a quick note - Remember to vote on ALL sessions. If you don't don't it's not counted. If you vote a 1, it's counted and weighted (at least it looked like it). So go though ALL the session and vote honestly if you would be interested in the session or not. I Did, and it looks like I might drop by some of the Drupal sessions as they sound interested too !

Re: OSCMS Summit in Sunnyvale, California March 22-23rd (Free to attend!)
There has been some updates to the schedule:
Changelog
* 2007-03-13: Swapped Thursday's 1:45p - 2:45p "Internationalization in Drupal" with the 4:15p - 5:15p's "Using node_access in Drupal 5" -- a co-presenter for the former was unavailable during this time slot.
* 2007-03-13: Swapped Thursday's 11:30a-12:30p "Joomla! v 1.5 Templates" with the 4:15p - 5:15p's "Taming the Beast: CMS integration on the desktop with CIFS, Office, Dreamweaver and anything else" -- the presenter for the latter was unavailable in the afternoon, and this way the design sessions are staggered throughout the day, rather than folks having to choose between Drupal's and Joomla!'s.
* 2007-03-08: Swapped Thursday's 11:30a-12:30p "Video Delivery with Drupal" with the 10:15a - 11:15a "The new Drupal menu system" session... presenter cannot bend the laws of physics and be in two places at once.
Note: Amy's is now Thursday 4:14-5:15.
It's still going to be hard to choose the 11:30-12:30 slot since it's OpenID vs Yahoo API

Re: OSCMS Summit in Sunnyvale, California March 22-23rd (Free to attend!)
We got it all, baby, it's the USA!
I believe there is going to be taping and live broadcasting and all kinds of things in place that make my stomach turn when I think about it. So, I do not believe we have to video the sessions ourselves.
But, we do need to drink a couple of good beers when we are all done. That's a good plan.
Edit: the high tech plans for broadcasting.

But, we do need to drink a couple of good beers when we are all done. That's a good plan.
Edit: the high tech plans for broadcasting.

I saw something, somewhere about podcasting, but it was probably as Jay is suggesting, screen and voice, rather than video. It does appear that they are getting ready for the podcast capabilities in each of the three rooms. It also sounds like that will be stored for later sharing in addition to being live.
Those of us presenting might want to exchange emails this weekend and coordinate a bit.
