Joomla User Group : Southern African Region

Post by Slingshot » Thu May 24, 2007 12:37 pm

As you know, we are all Joomla enthusiasts, and would like to share ideas, support one another, refer excess work and well, just enjoy our community of Joomla Users here in Southern Africa.

So here is your invitation to join the Joomla Southern African User Group.  This is an open mailing list and will only be moderated to preserve the continuity of the group.  So click right in and lets Joomla!

We hope to establish one group in each of the nine provinces, and are due to run a Joomla Day in June, subject to approval by the Team.

You may also want to visit the Joomla Southern African Portal, for local training, support and referrals for Joomla work.

Hi all,

just a short note - I really like this kind of design and look for the user group. Should we may be consider this to be a suggestion for other groups as well?

Hi Alex

Sure - we would be honoured ;D

In South Africa there are a few very active and healthy Linux User Groups, where we got the idea of an email list based support group, which is locally based.  Here the LUG's are active in a regional level, centred around major cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The only downside so far is that people in the group do not seem to respond to emails sent out, pressumably because they are too busy, or disinterested.  We have been sending Joomla Development Referrals via the list, but have not had such a good response from the members, so we are currently opting for a more direct mailing list, using groups in Gmail, which seems to have a better response.

However the Google Groups technology lends itself very well to user groups, and is the best options so far from what I have seen other Joomla Groups using, and is much quicker and easier to setup than a fully customised Joomla site (although I am probably going to be shot down in flames for that last opinion.

We would be keen to discuss user group establishment further as we are in the midst of trying to activate South African Joomla Users, by virtue of the Joomla Day South Africa events, and the Joomla User Groups and the Joomla Southern African Portal.

Any other ideas would be welcomed, especially how to manage referrals for development, design and other Joomla work.

Cheers, Sean
