Language subsites and more

Post by august » Sun Oct 23, 2005 1:46 am

So far, i have driven http://www.joomlanordic.com. That went pretty well, but now I have decided to move the forum part to the norwegian sub-forum here on joomla.org (and done it). This was because it makes it a lot more available for first time users, and also gives everything a clean and easy-to-get structure.

Now, what would have been truly awesome would if we somehow could manage to make the whole joomla.org multilingual. Subdomains, like de.joomla.org, it.joomla.org, no.joomla.org in my case, fr.joomla.org, give you joomla.org, but in the corresponding language.

This is probably impossible, so i therefore suggest something more overcomeable. The news-part of joomla.org should be multilingual. I don´t know how exactly that would be done technically, but so far I have only worked out the concept. Would that not be nice to have everything in one place?

Also, why cannot all those support sites and news sites around start contributing to joomla.org, to give the users ONE really good news and documentation site? I can see that news is good to have from more than one source, so a couple of news sites is cool, but at least documentation.

We have a wiki now for norwegian documentation, at http://wiki.joomlacms.no, but why can not joomla have the same? I have suggested this before, and you say that "it is best to have it the way we have it now" (that was not a direct quote) - but what harm can it do to just put up a wikipedia-like wiki for people to use? It cannot make things worse, can it?

My experience in managing multi-country web sites says that structure like it.joomla.org etc. is not so good.

Better will be http://www.joomla.org/germany

Yeah, that is a good idea. The same concept, but that layout, would have been awesome! Anyone in the team reading this?

Yes we are reading this... ;)

Your suggestions have been noted, however until Joomla support multi-language 'out of the box' such a setup would require a huge effort to maintain. Be assured that we are working to support the international section of the community.

I was in AIESEC IT Team when we did the huge change of the country web site policy from http://www.bg.aiesec.org to http://www.aiesec.org/bulgaria
It was quite usefull, because if someone wanted to see the site of Malta, was not supposed to know the extension of it.

Check out how the browsing through countries was done there - http://www.aiesec.org

Out of the box or not - a multilingual joomla.org would have been a great thing for the community and for newcomers. Lets put this on ice until it is out "of the box".
