Whats stopping you to use Joomla 1.5 in your project ?
Hi Guys,
I am representing a web development team from India, and I'm just willing to contribute some hours a week in open source work.
I would like to hear what's the current need of all of you in beta version of Joomla 1.5: what components? extensions ? plugins ? or something else.
I would love to get started on some basic components to help the community.
Thanks
Abhimanyu Grover

Hi Abhimanyu -
How have you been? One idea is to come into the Joomla! Coding 101 forum area. There are a group of us who are learning about Joomla! v 1.5 extensions development - and some talking about what extensions are needed. I'm certain we could learn a TON from you! And, I know you could get some good ideas there.
I'm going to request this thread be moved into the forum - hope that's okay! Talk to you, again, soon!

Welcome to the world of Joombies
We are slowly ramping up. Some of us have a version of php eclipse installed and working and are learning how to use it to host projects on joomlacode
It is a good time to jump in, and you would be a very welcomed participant.

A big one would be the ability to add custom content fields. Take a look at Drupal's CCK to get an idea. I think this the main thing that Joomla needs.

Maybe I just don't know 1.5 yet, but it also appears you can't view the page with locations of each menu either as you can with 1.1x.

Thanks tjay, for the welcome.... I'll do my best in my free time
Yes, I think thats really needed. I will wait for what others say about it...
Its important thing, but this type of customization is more required in communities/networks type of websites. Plus, It will be best to focus more on general category of Joomla users...
I'm not sure what you mean.. ?

Re: Whats stopping you to use Joomla 1.5 in your project ?
Hey all,
Im developing some components for Joomla 1.5 but what's stopping me from using Joomla 1.5 for production sites is the following:
- No forums that support Joomla 1.5 yet (FireBoard is also buggy in 1.5)
- Forum bridges no longer possible (at least so it seams)
- Media manager still very buggy
- Access levels still not customizable (And no components yet to enhance it)
- Not a lot of developers on 1.5 yet, so legacy mode is a must (although i personally would choose not to do a single line of 1.0.x coding since it will all have to go once u go for native 1.5)
This slows me down a lot in the development process
But i'll hop on and off the 101 forums to see how u guys doing and help out where i can. I truly like this initiative (it's what i missed when i started with Mambo 3.?.? ) and i will try to put in my best as well.

Re: Whats stopping you to use Joomla 1.5 in your project ?
Definitely all worthwhile initiatives that I'm sure we'd all like to see, and hopefully we will in the not too distant future.
Time is always our enemy, but I have no doubt as we start moving towards the final release, some of these will be addressed.
We still have a great deal of developers out there working hard are bringing both old and new apps to 1.5

If you're not a part of the solution, you're a part of the problem.
Re: Whats stopping you to use Joomla 1.5 in your project ?
Patience is tough
Truth is 1.5 is a huge leap forward. I think it is going to be very difficult to expect the pieces to fall into place as fast as we would like.
Good thing we have 1.0 there to keep things in place until we get there.
Still, the forum piece is going to be addressed (hopefully soon) with the PHPBB3 J1.5 bridge. But even there, you can still run a forum on the same site as an independent application.
The other will fall in line or some bright person will replace them with a 1.5 version.
We just have to breath often and help where we can, the hurdles will be jumped.

And along with CCK, something similar to the Drupal Views family of modules that make it really easy to generate and display results of customized DB queries.tbianco wrote:A big one would be the ability to add custom content fields. LQM 1.0 RC2 of Toby Patterson is the database tool you are looking for in 1.5. DBQ is its predecesoor on the 1.0.x series.
CCK is not ready to run in Drupal (a bunch of modules that have to be configured neatly, not very transparent), as far as I experienced.
Cheers, Henk

Thanks for sharing the info. Definitely, forum is a very big need of Joomla 1.5... Some others members also asked me for the forums as well, but I as an individual can not start such project.. a team would do much better...
BTW, I dont think there's any of the active project going on for the same ? or there is ?

What are you talking about? CCK is one of the top modules used in Drupal. It's a codebase to build upon and the modules enhance it's foundational structure. Having the ability to post more than just a two field form would be extremely invaluable to to the Joomla community and to control the way content is posted.
For example, lets say I have a group of people that are not HTML savvy and all I want them to do is post images with a caption. With the use of CCK on Drupal I can define two fields, an image field and a text field. Now they don't have to worry about the alignment of the image and the text like you would in a TinyMCE editor. Instead I'm creating a bigger separation between data and presentation. At this point I have more control over how a person interacts and uses the CMS.

Re: Whats stopping you to use Joomla 1.5 in your project ?
Was wondering who might object! Yea, CCK is so important and valuable, in fact, v 6 might have CCK in core, there has been hopeful talk about it. Beta 1 will likely roll Monday. Here's a good video on cck and views if others want to see it in motion.
We are going to end up thinking differently about extensions in Joomla! with the amazing, new MVC application architecture our core developers have given us. I predict the really great Joomla! extensions will be much more like CCK and Views. This framework is very extensible. Instead of building gadgets and widgets that add a specific function, foundation extensions that allow everyone to extend Joomla! in their own specific way will begin to emerge.
In fact, there are a few big extensions coming from several third party developers that will start bringing along that capability. We might not end up with 2,000+ extensions (I can only hope!) but fewer, far more powerful tools that require a bit more thinking to use but give so much more than we have had before.
It's going to be fun around here!

Re: Whats stopping you to use Joomla 1.5 in your project ?
@Amy...
Amy, I haven't had an opportunity to really dig into Drupal that much, the templating features just seem like a pain that's why I like Joomla, but it's always been that the core of Drupal is what I like when they worked on CCK and Views from what I have read. I have heard your podcast and read a few of your blog posts when you were interviewing the Joomla team, do you have a good feeling that Joomla could be everything Drupal is core development wise with the ability to give a very flexible and EASY template system (something that I truly feel Drupal is lacking).
For the most part reading through most of extensions in the Joomla community nothing has really impressed me too much. The core things I would want would be event registration and management, forums, shopping cart (much like Magento), CCK, a functional blog (which I'm surprised Joomla does not have included in it's core), and a the ability to create custom forms for gathering information. Which I'm sure most of the things I listed off are there but they just dont' look pretty or they are not native to 1.5
I'm totally shocked that the Joomla community wasn't jumping on 1.5 to begin developing on it waaayyy earlier! I mean in the Ruby on Rails community people were developing off the bleeding edge, same with many the of various PHP projects. I think it could be the fact that the core of Joomla went from a procedural code set up into an object orientated set up so must devs were trying to figure out how to integrate that. I dunno just my stab in the dark!
Btw, what are the other extensions an who are the other third party developers?

Re: Whats stopping you to use Joomla 1.5 in your project ?
I don't know about other 3rd party devs but personally I'm not thrilled with the way MVC is implemented in 1.5.
Granted I've only looked at the Hello World demo project over at the dev wiki but that looks really convoluted and bloated rather than intuitive and user friendly. Especially after looking at some of the other MVC frameworks for PHP such as CakePHP. If I hadn't been looking at other MVC frameworks I seriously doubt that I would have understood the Hello World demo at all or the benefits of using MVC in the first place.
But then again that might just be how my puny my brain works

Re: Whats stopping you to use Joomla 1.5 in your project ?
For me, there are two main things that are not available natively in 1.5 yet that is stopping me from deploying today, a calendar component and a forms generation component. I have jerry-rigged the perForms component into 1.5 and it works for the most part, but I would love to not have to enable legacy support and I haven't been able to find a calendar component that works in 1.5. That being said, I'm working on the calendar and hoping someone else is working on the forms generation.

Go to Site -> Global Configuration. In the Site subsection there are SEO settings. Set 'Search Engine Friendly URLs' to Yes. This will create URLs like http://example.com/index.php/mypage instead of http://example.com/index.php?option=com ... 2&Itemid=1.
If you're using Apache, you can go a step further and set the 'Use Apache mod_rewrite' to Yes to make URLs like http://example.com/mypage instead of http://example.com/index.php/mypage, however you will need to rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess on your server and also edit the .htaccess file and uncomment the right set of parameters.
Finally, if you set 'Add suffix to URLs' to Yes, a .html extension will be added to all URLs so if you enable all SEO features, your final URL will look like http://example.com/mypage.html, a far cry from the original http://example.com/index.php?option=com ... 2&Itemid=1.
