A last minute substitution, since we have some speakers coming in from out of town, we will be bumping the Template presentation and replacing it with one on designing for Joomla 1.5
Jonah Braun from the Joomla! Security Task Force will present an overview of how to build a native Joomla 1.5 component using the MVC method. Good practices and common pitfalls will be discussed.

This is a bit off topic, so please forgive me if it's inappropriate.
I wanted to let those of you in NYC know there is a very interesting event scheduled for October 16 at the UN entitled
Development Impacts of FOSS: Regional Case Studies where FOSS solutions implemented around the world in science, education and government will be shared as a summary, of sorts, to a
symposium held last August.
Registration is limited although a
live webcast will also be provided. It is a great opportunity to extend the value of the good work our developers have provided in important ways for the world. If there are some from the area interested in attending the event or anyone who wants to listen in on the broadcast, I think it would be good to consider how Joomla! can be put to service more and more.
Kind regards,
Amy

Since moving to NYC, I've discovered the ultimate tool for the non-NYC native.
HopStop
http://www.hopstop.comIt's like mapquest, but for public transportation.
So if your going to Joomladay and want to know how to get to there via subway/bus this tool is excellent!
Another good resource is the New Jersey transit authority if your coming in from NJ. They have a tool where you can enter 2 addresses, including NYC addresses and NJ addresses and they will plot the transit point between the two states/transit systems(at least, it works to get from Astoria to Newark, so I am assuming it will do the reverse!)
If anyone familiar with NJ can suggest a good central "launching point" on the NJ side to use for someone wanting to know how to get into the city, that might help some people.

Well, let me be the first to say, I think the first JoomlaDay East was a great Success! I think I speak for most that attended, it was a great time! I want to thank all the organizers, speakers, and Google for making the day possible. I just wish there were more of these...

Hi everyone,
Being the emcee and one of the organizers of the event, I was very happy to see how the event went! Thanks to everyone for making this a strong participatory event. Thanks to Leslie, Ben, Elin, and Mark for their organizing efforts, and Louis and James for their great opening talks.
With all the demand for the event, I definitely see us putting on a Joomla Day USA Mid-Atlantic (think Washington DC) soon! Of course, I'll go through the proper channels first to get this moving forward.
Best,
Ryan

Thanks Ryan, Ben and Leslie for all your organizing work! It really paid off with a great day.
And thanks Google for the great space and food!
And everyone who came, it really made me appreciate that the strength of Joomla! is it's community, whether developers like Louis or lawyers like James or great people who step up to lead a breakout session or help out users in the hack room..

Joomla!Day East was great, and I'm glad I was at least there to enjoy James' color commentary on open source licenses. After sitting through so many meetings with him it was really entertaining to see him stand up and talk.
I do regret not being there to harass Louis on his talk. (devil grin)
Thanks to Leslie and the Google folks for providing such a great venue for the event, thanks to Ryan and everyone else behind the scenes for making this happen.
Lastly, it was fantastic to attend a Joomla event without having to hop on a plane. You'd think this would happen more often in the most populous city in the United States LOL

What an awesome event. The organizers did a great job considering the time constraints and participants' diverse capacities and interests in the project. Thanks to Google NYC for the accommodations: really cool, really connected, really yummy, really easy to get to, really dedicated to FOSS.

I echo the sentiment. JoomlaDay NYC was excellent. It should be an annual event. The interaction between the team and developers was great and I too derived great value out of James' discussion on the GPL. Thank you. Thank you.

Joomladay East was great! I missed most of the GPL presentation, which is probably for the best
but I really appreaciate James taking the time to talk about what can and can't be done with the GPL from the Joomla perspective(as that is the one most important!) And especially his patience in answering question after question.
Louis' presentation was great, as was the security break out session(I missed the first session as I had to get some content written up and my laptop choose moving from one room to another as the time to install 27 Vista updates, so when I rebooted it took foooorever.
Still, it was fun to hang out in the hack room and complain about Vista. :-)
I wasn't quite ready to discuss the NYC Joomla user group. Still, hopefully if there are any interested parties they will make it to the next meeting(second thursday of the month folks! That means November 8th. Make sure to RSVP so your not left waiting in the lobby because you can't get in.
I don't make the rules, but if we want a decent meeting place in the city with projector and all, we need to follow the NYC security rules...)
Get your name and email address to me and I'll make sure to pester you as the meeting gets closer to let you know where, when, and what we will talk about - though feel free to tell me to stop if you don't need constant reminders. You can view our tentative agenda up on the site now,
http://www.joomlanyc.org - along with summaries of the past meetings so you can find out what you have missed and get an idea about whether or not it's worth your time to attend.
Thanks a lot to the whole Joomla team for organizing this, the presentors for coming out, and Google for hosting!

You're not kidding on that one! At are JUG meeting 2 nights earlier, there were people complaining that they could not register because there were too many people! I must say, it was well worth it...

Hi everyone,
Slightly piggy-backing on this thread here to make sure you were all aware of the Joomla Pizza, Bugs, and Fun event happening in NYC happening December 8-9. We're co-hosting it in DC and San Francisco, to help spend two days cranking on getting bugs out of the 1.5 tracker, to help the team clean up 1.5 for release. You can learn more on the joomla.org homepage, and you can register at
http://www.joomladayusa.org.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
-Ryan
