Sure I agree majority rules, but can it be justified to use something that is not original?
Some food for thought...

I think 'Sudden Death' rounds should be reserved for arcade games, and 'Overtime' should be reserved for Sport.
Majority rules in a fair vote. Let's deal with it.

Thanks for posting this, it helped in regard to my earlier post about the similar logo at Global Giving.
I really do like the current logo a lot and, in fact, it's the one I voted for. Since there's very little chance that Joomla will be confused with Global Giving I guess there's no problem.
I feel better anyway, I just went for a nice long bike ride in the west hills of Portland instead of having a drink.

Congratulations to the designer of the logo. I am glad that this one was chosen, I thought it was a clear winner.
I must say, I really like the product - thrilled at how easy it is once you get used to it and I am glad a design has been choosen to represent it.

I had the same first impression, and I think it has more to do with choice of colors.
I really like the thought behind this logo and I am sure that it will grow on me. I like to congratulate the winner and all finalist for their achivements and the comunity for participating.
Hi & concratz to Winner!
That's no bat that winning logo is similar to some other logo.
But I think that's quite stupid that J logo is so close to one everyone knows (the Office logo). I think it won cause everybody felt it familar...
The Bird is (or was ?) dropping something from its but (trademark tm) Message of logo: "Trademarks are something that birds create"?!?!
Next time I think I'll not vote on anything...

Strikingly similar. Not to be mean, but I don't think this logo should of been selected as winner.
Edit: No the attached image is not an old variation of Ubuntu logo; I was just commenting that it was strikingly similar. The attached image however is of the Global Giving logo as abovementioned in comparison to the winning logo. Sorry for not making this clear.
Ubuntu is also a swahili word, if i'm not mistaken... :::eerie music plays:::
I understand the need for joomla! to be original, perhaps some of the final tweaks of the logo will set it apart from the other logos. Who knows.

I say we just sit the bird on top of the winner and call it a day! LOL
It won't look like the Office logo at all then...be more like woodstock then LOL
There are more pressing things to be hashed out than a simple logo...
Congrats to the winner...I personally like JBird but we voted and the public has spoken...
We can't overthink this too much and it was never going to be something everyone was happy with...Same thing with the name...
I could care less what the logo is or what it's called as long as the damn thing works!
LOL

Congrats dude!!!
Actually I voted for JBird also ... you know it only made sense to me (IMHO) Joomla ... FREE as a BIRD!!! (Get it?)
But I am just one vote. Good job to all five finalists.
Just my 2 cents

Are the other logos Open Source? If not consider donating the bird to the OpenClipart library.
i would've too, but i didn't run across the logo threads until after the vote was over.

I agree. I think it might work however but it looks too static right now. Curious to see how it gets redone. Hopefully not by the "professional agency" that cooked up the name

"One the most famous examples is from 1976 when the National Broadcasting Company debuted its new logo, which had cost $600,000 to design (a huge amount in today's dollars)." From CreativePro...
Wow, I'm glad you're open source!
My heart goes out to the winner, after this stunning comparison to the Global Giving logo. People always have similar ideas, no matter what the field. That's why you have to publish first! My advice is to clean up the color and move forward.
I voted for the Fish, but my personal favorite was the Meercat. It was awesome, although it did look somewhat like Snoopy playing Joe Cool...but that's probably why I liked it...loved those meercats...I voted for the Fish because it looked the most like a professional logo. It had no negative connotations that I could see. It fit nicely with single or double lines of text, and could be positioned without any loss of continuity. It was very flexible.
The new logo is better than the old one. I never realized the old one was an asterisk until someone mentioned it. Because it was orange, I thought of it as an orange slice, you know, garnishment...never understood that, except in the context of umbrella drinks...
You guys are so funny! I have spent the day on exceedingly dismal subjects, and came here when I realized the logo might have been announced. Then I read this thread. LOL.....
Thanks to the winner for working so hard on the new logo!

I also voted jBird. I am surprised to see this logo win the poll. I agree that it looks too much like the office logo.

The interlocking hands theme is a good one. The colors chosen are fairly standard design as the combination shows dissimlarity as well as similarity. I don't see this as a "copy" of anything, but rather of a new (and nicely done) application of a universally recognizeable concept.
Folks, I've CARVED the interlocking hands of human forms in primitive-inspired stone carvings and wood carvings for years.
This is a nice logo. Kudos to the designer. Yeah it looks KINDA like a MS icon and it looks KINDA like the Ubuntu logo, but it appears to be an original design and let's face it... it KINDA looks like it has tuning forkes in it, but nobody complained about Joomla! having nothing to do with music.
If the jbird had been chosen there would be those saying it looked like a Dove soap logo, or any one of a NUMBER of other bird-inspired things. So... I say let's enjoy this. It really is a nice logo and well done indeed.

I agree with reikimaster on this. Not only is the interlocking hands theme a good one, it shows up in all kinds of art. You could, as others have illustrateed here, link any logo to another one. I think it's professional looking and well designed.
I also think the vote is over and decided. Perhaps folks need to find something else/better to do with their time.

Hear hear. Of course the dev team and the designer will take appropriate steps to avoid legal conflicts. Learn to love the name, and the logo - your commitment to them will help make Joomla stand out in the cms-crowd!
I had such a hard time choosing between this one and the fish that I cannot remember which one I voted for in the end
Good work on the logo, it's really meaningful, and reflects the community here very well!

one of the main points about trademark infringement is infringement against another in the same or simiilar category, which the ms office logo
is registered in, and in a zillion-and-one different computer/software related categories.. the dove soap logo is a virtual non-issue for a computer software vendor; as would the proposed joomla logo if it were used to identify an automobile seat cover brand or something equally removed from the software industry.

Zoomer, I do understand your point, however it could also be argued that the MS logo uses geometric shapes while the Joomla! logo clearly uses representations of human forms. And the the MS logo has no interlocking or interwoven pieces while the Joomla! one obviously does. And MS uses yellow where this logo uses orange.
See what I mean? I think it'd be a stretch to try to prove any kind of infringement.
I'm also NOT an expert in this area and I have no wish to enter a heated debate (that wasn't aimed at anyone at all... just a statement) so I'm going to back out of this and simply observe.

yes but the similarity isn't an opinion...we can see that, apart form the idea behind this beautiful logo...
My question is:
what does Bill Gates think about that?
so let's avoid a possible legal conflict (even for the future years...) making it not too similar...
Let's Be careful MS is watching us...

that's kinda the source of my concern... microsoft has a long history of going after anyone and anything that even remotely resembles an infringement from their skewed point of view... remember, microsoft is in the portal and content management business too.

Man, what an ungrateful bunch of people! A man worked hard to make a logo, not expecting to even make it to the top 5, and when he wins by popular vote you guys start demanding redo's and runoffs. If I were the winner, I would take my logo and say forget it to all of you.
I personally voted for the logo. It was my first time participating in such a thing, and from the discussion I see here, it will be my last. I am not sure I want to be part of a community that spends its time snipping at people that dedicate their time and energy to helping make this CMS a world class project.
My two cents that I am positive will get me shot!
