Glad you made the jump.  It will be more than worth it.  A few things though.

I don't recommend using 1.5 for production just yet as it is BETA.  I would stay with 1.0.11 at least until RC1 or RC2.  There are outstanding plates out there, I will give you the URL's if interested.

look at the bug tracker, i prefer that those bugs are fixed before a beta release

Here it is still the 12th, and will be so for another 6 hours or so. And my feeling about this beta release is, they should release it the 12th. Firstly, because it is a beta, so we all are aware there are still many bugs in there to solve, and secondly, after first being announced for - if i remember well somewhere in march, and this time even with a fixed date, 12th of october 2006, the Joomla team can not hold back on releasing a beta 1.5 today. If they dont, i believe it will be a big bump in the credibility and faith we all have in the Joomla project. And, remember, it's just a beta, so release it today!
So, we also can see what has been achieved in one year of time, development away from Mambo to a fresh and new Joomla.
Therefor I really don't agree with the few posts above, telling to look at the bug tracker, and prefer to wait for a bug free beta. Nonsense, we want a beta, with all its bugs, because it's a beta!

Yes well the advantage of the demo cd is that you dont have to have a server to install it on and even if you do you dont need to worry about breaking it
