Migrating static site via Joomla! 1.5 Beta-2 to future Joomla-Stable?
Posted: Sat May 05, 2007 1:45 pm

I'm planning to migrate a large static website to Joomla 1.5 stable.
Is it a good idea to beginn migrating the site to a non-production Joomla 1.5 Beta-2 site and then upgrade to Joomla 1.5 stable when it comes out?
I mean: Will the contents created in Joomla Beta-2 be usable and unaltered after updating to 1.5 stable?
I'm not talking about third-party-components, it's just about sections, categories and content articles!
This strategy would give me enough time to migrate the numerous static pages and to develop the template.
But I don't want to invest the work in something that is no good after updating to stable!
Or are there specific problems to be expected with the content articles because of ever changing Joomla-core?
If so: which type of problems are to be feared?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Cord

This should answer it for you.
Tonie wrote:What is the difference between a beta and a release candidate?
The difference between a beta version and a release candidate is best described in terms of code maturity. A beta version is not considered to be ready for production sites. With a release candidate out the development workgroup says that they are almost done, and consider it production ready.

Yes, you can. With the release of beta 2 we have frozen the API's and database scheme. For 3P developers this means that now is the time to start working on their new extensions or make their existing extensions compatible. People that want to develop websites can already start their development process (designing template, putting content in, ....), just at least wait until we released a first release candidate before putting the site in a production environment.

BTW, I translated the official announcement almost word by word this morning (on joomla.fr frontpage and forums:
http://forum.joomlafacile.com/showthread.php?p=159235).
We have a discussion there and a user just reported that the mbstring param in php.ini caused problems on his semi-dedicated server as it's set to 7 by default, a setting of 0 fixed this.. just a FYI, I have no idea what this is for and what influence this setting has...

What great news to wake up to this morning! I and so many others have been waiting for the next update to the 1.5 development process, so this is simply fantastic.
I'd like to thank all of the people involved in this great project for your hard work, skills, focus and dedication. You are all to be congratulated.
Soon, I'm going to start testing 1.5 beta out for my not-for-profit magazine Web site. We will participate in reporting back any bugs or issues. Thanks again!

Just wondering if anyone is interested in creating a topic to track Component, Module, Plugin, & Template native compatability?
Cheers

Great work!
Just installed the Beta2 without any major hitch...
And it looks lovely! Very quick and efficient response time and looks to be much better organized than the previous versions when navigating...
Only point of issue I will make is the pre install check still reads a nonexisting configuration.php as unwriteable despite the fact that the FTP layer will allow full write privs (once the data is configured).
But creating an empty configuration.php and chmod 777 solves the issue. Just have to remember to set it back to 755 once the installation is done!
Great Job though!
Is there a pool as to when the first question of "when will the RC be released" will be posted? LOL

Thanks for the translation Joe ! Nice work. Can you ask people to post specific bugs and issues on the Q&T forums ? Makes it easier to do follow up. Thanks.

Which forum do you want people to use? There appear to be two in use
Joomla! 1.5 BETA 2 - FeedbackJoomla! 1.5.x_Q&T

The beta 2 forum is a user feedback forum for people that have questions about using Joomla! 1.5 beta 2, not about development. These forums are not intended to post bugs. Possible bug reports will be moved to the Q&T forums by the moderators.
The Q&T forums are intended for testers and developers who want to report possible bugs. People that use these forums are advised to use the nightly builds or the SVN for testing.

ok that also answers my question in the first one about it's location..
Jinx, I think it's easier if the French people post their reports in their native language and if they can't be clarified and are confirmed, we'll repost here in english? Not all users post well in English.. (take me for example..

)

Sure Joe that's fine. Just try to seperate bug reports and user questions as I explained above, makes it easier for moderators.

Hi all
Congratulations to everyone involved! Looking forward to the RC and the push forward now. I have to add I've been testing Phil Taylor's new component JoomlaTags and it's excellent. Once Rockettheme starts their template conversion to 1.5 and ijoomla magazine and news launch 1.5 components I'll be even happier.
Well done and more importantly thanks to you all for giving up your time to support the Community.
Take care.
