Well, I've been coding with PHP and MySQL for a while, but I haven't worked with an open source project yet, and know less about Joomla! I'm looking forward to learning something about this.

Hiddie Ho Y'all,
This is the place for me! I'm
just "cracking the book" on CMSs and Lord is there a lot to learn! Eek! It's both exciting... cuz I have high hopes for some of my domains that have been sitting dormant... but it also feels a little daunting cuz there IS a lot to learn!
I'm so glad you guys created this lil oasis for us noobs (said with pride!) because it can be overwhelming to dig through all the more advance questions/issues/posts in the regular forum in the hopes of finding a post that will one, answer my "silly" question and two, answer it in the simplest of terms. Anyway...
Thanks again!
Lyte

Ok. I know absolutely nothing about web programming languages for starters. I need to create an online community and stumbled upon the joomla/community builder combo. To me this seems better/easier than the open source social networking scripts such as phpibazi or elgg, although they have their strong points. I need private profiles, comments, private messaging, news tickers, calendar, forums, blog and rss, etc. I am under the impression that i can accomplish all of these things with joomla and some addons. Am i correct in thinking this? If so could you guys tell me where to start, if not could you maybe point me in the right direction?
Thanks
Sam

my own personal joomla! experience has been such that what you wanted above can be accomplished with ease. you need joomla! with relevant extensions( whats called components/modules/mambots ) which all can be foud in joomla! extensions, most of which are free...and some worthy commercial ones.

Ok thats motivating knowing that it is possible. Im still comparing the open source social networks before i give up on them, joomla definately seems equally capable. I might be willing to freelance a project of this type, it is for a church group that a family member is apart of. With my type of schedule and limited knowledge i am starting to doubt that i will be able to complete this task on the side. I have someone looking into phpizabi for me but he is no joomla expert so he can't tell me which is more capable. Any freelancers out there? If interested you can PM me.
Thanks
Sam
