Glad to see you've taken that into consideration. I've been on a few forums where the admins botched the convert job from one system to another losing many accounts, posts and other information.

Not to insinuate that the devs here were going to do that, but when you here all this talk about migrating it makes you nervous. Correction, perhaps it makes me nervous? Thank you for the explanation BSD.

SMF is really great piece of software and I'd be using it more than anything but it has that licence problem and that's all. Converting members tables from one forum to another is a bit of pain for the person that has to do it but it is not impossible to write one nice script that'll convert this to that and so on. I understand when you say that it makes you nervous...it used to make me too till I figured out how to do it the easy way. Since it seems that we'll stick to SMF there is no need to worry.

We would have no interest in continuing development for it like we do with Mambo.  We would (if we chose to) simply use it for its intended purpose.

And this community wouldn't exist at all. That is my point, developers and users would lose

Will you please go visit the SMF forums and see the very large and active third party developer community they have and stop whining about it.

Hey guys, I don't want to upset anyone here, but I do want to ask you to please, let's leave this topic alone now.  There has been some very good discussion and I don't think anyone reading through all the posts would be left in any doubt about how you feel, and why.  However, this forum is our face to the world and right now there are lots of people coming over for a look.  Some are here because they know about the site from the "other" forum, some are here because they are following news links.
I feel we need to remember that in certain places this community is being treated as the "bad guys", the ones who have created friction within the Mambo community by breaking away.  So, what happens when newcomers get here?  I don't think any of us want people to think we are a fractious, divided bunch.  Many of us already here have seen your posts in other places and know you are not the argumentative type, but without that background newcomers may get the wrong impression.

I heartily apologise if my post offends anyone - that is most certainly NOT the intention.  I just feel that in this time of settling down it is important that we all stay focussed on the project and remember that everything we do/say here impacts on how people perceive us.

I let this debate go as there were some good points raised, however we are starting to stray.

I realize this can be a very emotive topic for some and I have had the very distinct pleasure of attending a lecture given by John Stallman, the staunchest proponent of the ideals of Open Source. 


This debate can easily degenerate as Open Source is also an idealogy.
What people need to understand is like any idealogy there are varying levels of intensity that people follow or live by an idealogy.


We have made the decision to use SMF and for the medium term we will continue using it.
At some stage we may reevaluate this decision if we find a better Open Source alternative or if SMF doesnt meet our needs.  However at this stage we are very happy with the performance of SMF.


To that end I am 'locking' this thread as I cannot see any further value in the discussion continuing
