A good place to start might be to create a thread with all the information you feel is missing from the existing documentation for total newbies and ask a moderator if it can be stickied.

Good suggestion Vimes.

Also you can help by helping yourself a bit too. Conduct a search first to see if you can find a post regarding your issue, or browse some forums you think your issue might be listed in.  Visit the FAQ forum, read the guides for newcomers there.

You can also help on the forums by being as complete as possible in the description of your problems, and by having the title of your post describe (short description) of the problem.  When you get some knowledge give back the help you have received on the forum to other newcomers.

It's ridiculous.

No instructions on how to install a template. No instuctions on how to install mambots, modules, components. No basic instuctions on how to make sense of the logic behind news items, newsflashs, it's just awful.

It's clear, not a whit of thinking went into showing people how to use this application -- again: the documentation is the worse I've yet seen.

In addition, my sense is this problem is not about to be solved any time soon and that's because no one seems to grasp what good documentation is.

The magic word is "tutorial"  -- which is step-b-step instructions on how to do basic tasks. Not grand overviews about how wonderful Joomla is. Not deep discussions about what each component does, but "step-by-step" instuctions on how to install stuff, reorder content, etc.

This said, I'm dropping Joomla until your next effort at documentation comes out. But again, I am not of the mind that the vast gulf that exists with this app will be filled. And that's because you've yet to aknowledge that the existing documentaion sucks.

Honestly, I am surprised anyone even answered this post with how rude and obnoxious he is being . Ric! you can't expect Joomla to help you when you obviously need basic computer lessons.

having troubles with your zip app opening it up on you?

change the settings of your application.
Or try right clicking the link and "save target as"

When it comes to installing things, follow the instructions. Very easy, in fact Joomla has one of the easiest install process i have come across. I am going to go ahead and appologize for you Ric, to the whole community for your additude and obsolute lack of appreciation.

I would LOVE to see Ric here make his site without the help of a CMS, jesus! he would be crying to macromedia saying the same things.

Macromedia no more, try http://www.macromedia.com and see where you end up :) (or rather :( )
I'll try to start some basic stuff, but aren't there all those Flash how-tos on some site?

Yes, Yes, I refuse to call it Adobe. Just been saying MM for way too long. It is a shame it's gone.

And I wasn't trying to get more how to stuff i was simply commenting on the arrogance of Ric.

If they made Joomla easier to use then it already is, we would easily be replaced by chimps.

I am beginning to think you are a robot with predefined phrases, I DO NOT NEED TUTORIALS,
I was commenting on Ric being rude, thats it.

Thanks Brian, had forgotten the URL (as I don't use tutorials anymore..)
I am in fact a tutorial-writting robot, and will start doing so as soon as I log off here.
But I'm always online...
DOn't worry danimal, we were both speaking more generally about available ressources, for the benefit of any (other) readers of this thread.
MM being no more is sad indeed. But another story. ;)
