Haven't read the whole thread, but wouldn't a more traditional logo be better?
I'm thinking along the lines of an easy to recognize printing press, That's a very clear CMS :-)
I googled for an image and slapped some text to it, to let you know what I have in mind. Please don't sue me

The people remind me of the 12 Monkeys movie logo

I must admit, that together with the great hand by Peek, this one is very good too. Thing is; it sticks out, even without the 'people' in front.
If you put this name on a, for instance, a pen and the word is resize to 0.5cm x 2.0cm it is still readable and best thing yet: you'll recognize it immediately.. and that's powerful... I'm not sure about the logo, but the word is definitely very good..

The only problem I see with this logo is the figure eight in Joomla. It takes away too much from the actual symbol of people in the circle. You should always have one point of emphasis. In this logo your eye is being drawn back and forth between the figure eight and the symbol. I think it would make a much more effective logo without the figure eight. Also I think the symbol should be a little larger.

It is not a figure 8 it is an infinty symbol. The cool thing is that the text part of the logo is echoed in the symbolic logo.
It is clean and elegant. I can see it gaining visual recognition like the old Mambo flower very quickly.

I had gotten the infinity in the text part, but hadn't really gone beyond the circle of people in the symbolic part; now that you mention the infinity there... d'oh, shoulda seen that!

This is probably my new favorite (replacing the hand) but is there a trademark issue with this being so similar to the mambo flower? All of the symbology in it is obviously different and wonderfully creative, but give it a tilt and it essentially superimposes on the mambo logo. Any lawyers out there?

This is not "ready to use" logo but rather idea, conception ...
On the picture above is original
african (shuahilli land?) traditional sculpture
named "Unity" (All Together ;) )
made of one piece of wood.
Isn't it great inspiration and just direct motif to create Joomla! logo?
Look at this ...If you appreciate my idea, I'll do some graphic design ...
If you wish - try do it self ...

A logo is not really to advertise a brand, it is to re-enforce it. Advertising is achieved using public relations (PR) and marketing - if you check the big players like Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia et al they all have their own ways of marketing, but they are not using the logo to advertise - they are selling the benefits of using this or that software, they are showing the end result, the lifestyle...the logo just happens to be on the page, not very big in the corner, as a mark, a signature.
Once a brand is established in people hearts and minds using marketing and backed up with good products, then you can have a logo on it's own and build all kinds of associations with it...that's the feeling connection..
Firstly..it communicates to you who it is..
Secondly it brings into your mind and emotions associations you have with that brand...
Remember this is a re-brand, so it has it's own unique challenges..people have become enamored with Mambo and I have to tell you that quite a few members of the dev team really loved the flower thing...we had many discussions about it...
In my experience of being in marketing and design for over 10 years and working with Glaxo, Reckitt Benkiser, Footjoy (to name drop a few!) I have been involved in many projects and seen good and really bad logos...with this in mind I have to say once again that the Peek hand and it's derivatives is really on the money...if that proof of concept is taken and refined, it really will rock...it has the right ingredients and the right attitude...
just my 2 pence..
Nick

Now those logos say it, and I feel it, and the 'hand' works on it's own as an icon, motif, logo etc etc and the logo type (text) works on it's own too, incorporating the infinity symbol, and of course they work together...this is a very, very strong concept..I have to congratulate those involved in coming up with those designs...they are superb!
I would be proud to endorse that logo, it really is excellent..

Actually, that would work well as a photo for an ad campaign..would also provide a few headaches for the clearance people to get copyright permission to use it...I am not convinced there will be an email address of the sculptor stamped on it somewhere!

Well if the hand is what we are going with here is a size reduction of the logo to make it a little smaller then the letters.
50x50
40x40

The size looks fine to me as is, the proportion looks good, there should be a displacement and discrepancy between sizes of the icon and the type, otherwise there is no dynamic..the type assumes more impact because it is a shape as well as a word, so the icon (hand in this case) needs to have a bit more of the action when they are together, in other words it needs to be a bit bigger than the type, so you focus on that first, then you track right for the text...

Same problem as with Joomla!
Who is owner of the word "Jumla" ?
This kind of sculpture is traditional, made by a lot of sculptors in Ghana.
Shows community - "All togheter" - as a one unit.
Nickdesigner wrote:A logo is not really to advertise a brand, it is to re-enforce it. ...
I agree with you at all.
Logo is nothing more than a way of visual identification. Visual id of company, company's product, community ...
But a great way to find out the proper logo design is to look first at the roots ...
Who we are?, What product is?, Who is made for? ... etc.
Sometimes (like in case of Joomla! I think) a good idea also is pay attention on source of name, it's meaning and why we choosed THIS name - what it means for us, what it should to mean for others.
So, that's the reason I suggest a motif like on picture above ...

That looks nice rendered up, but I am still with Peek's hand, but there is mileage in the sculpture being used for marketing, both in full view and close up variations..would look real nice..

Another variation.
"o" progressivly deformed an lighter, Joomla! enlighting earth.
Inspired from :
The name Joomla! is a phonetic spelling for the Swahili word "Jumla", which means "all together" or "as a whole". It was chosen as the entire teams behind Mambo were unanimous in their commitment to protecting the interests of the creators and community, which was the true cause for the success and acclaim earned by that project.

I also like the hand, and in combination with using the infinity in the text for the "oo", it kinda gives you:
Joomla! Infinite possiblities, right at your fingertips!
