Can someone from Core confirm 1.0.x can't be updated/graded to 1.5 due to DB differences please?
I have to confirm (or not) this to people on the French forums?
Thanks for any precise details on this.

To the question "Will there be a way to upgrade Joomla 1.0.x to 1.5?" Andy Miller answered in his RocketTheme forum, five days ago: "well, we dont have a good answer to that yet i'm afraid." So I guess it's all open, and personally I'm expecting a manual migration rather than an upgrade.

Kind regards,
Zorro

It's not that there won't be an upgrade path, it just we've not decided what the best approach for that path will actually be, hence the lack of a good answer :)  Don't worry, we'll make sure it's as painless as possible.

Determining the best method to handle upgrading from 1.0.x is one of the tasks that will be completed once we have released 1.5 Beta.

Since there is still work before even the beta is released, we cannot give any definitive answers regards this issue.
However, as noted we do assure people we will make it as painless as possible and will give detailled instructions - after all we want as many 1.0.x users upgrading to 1.5 as possible.

One question: I just read on mamboserver.com that they won some "best open source" award thingy. Is that a quality statement?
In other words: Should we all switch back to mambo? :-)
No, seriously: what should one make of this?

Some possibilities:
- they got the award because they have the better product
- they got the award because they have the better pr/sales/lobby team (or better connections to the jury)
- the award means nothing
- if joomla 1.5 was here already, joomla would have received the award
- just wait and see how things will be next year when joomla 2 is released

Scrut - Joomla! wasn't even at the LinuxWorld Australia conference in Sydney! Mambo is still a great product -- our devs built it! But you are right, watch for some distance with v 1.5 and beyond! Good points, but, we try not to worry about such things! Got a lot of work to do! Amy

You won't even have to wait that long!  :)

Hi busy developers! ;D

Is it worth installing joomfish now under 108 if i haven't started with any translation yet or better to wait for joomla 1.5? supposed to have better language and translating capabilities right? what exactly will be better in 1.5 concerning translation?

looking forward to 1.5 really!

Hi Fabs,  I would suggest waiting.  According to the statement on the home page from 02 April, version 1.5 will be released this month.  So they have another 6 days to release it.  It would just be a waste of your time to install joomlafish (still in beta I believe) for 1.0.8 and then to start all over on 1.5.
Also given you do not have a translation of text available yet, there is not an apparent burning need for it.

Start translating and in 6 days or less you can begin the yet undefined upgrade path to 1.5.

To clarify the statement specified that the Beta stage of 1.5 is being targetted for release by the end of April.

It should be read as a target date and Not a definitive deadline.  Further the next release for 1.5 will be a Beta release.
Beta releases are NOT suggested for use on live production sites:

So... when is the targeted release for a stable Joomla 1.5?

You have a really neat website! Is it a dog rescue site? ( I am a dumb American who can only speak one language -- and even that one I struggle with! )

The roadmap is: < http://dev.joomla.org/content/view/23/61/ > but there is not a release date for v. 1.5. Instead, the developers are working as fast and (more importantly) as accurately as they can. So, we are all being patient and trying to help where we can.

Thanks!
Amy

Thanx... it`s a animal rehoming site... and i want to use joomla in the next version of it. So i`m trying to be patient and wait for a stable version of Joomla 1.5. But it`s not easy... I`ve ben waiting a while... so work harder please, the design is already finished... months ago!  :P

But looking forward to the release... i guess i can start using the Beta for integrating the design... and upgrade to Stable before releaseing the site?

I am not sure they can work any harder, but they are aware we are all waiting! They can actually hear us breathing at the door!

Truthfully, that is your call on the beta. But, they will provide a migration path for v 1.0.8. You will not have wasted a moment of time starting on that platform.

We will get there! Thanks for joining us!

As everyone here, I'm waiting for the release of 1.5 with much anticipation.
I have a new site that I am hoping to go live somewhere around mid-June.  I would really like to just use 1.5 for this, to help ease any upgrades shortly after the site goes live.
Do you think it would be somewhat safe to use the 1.5 Beta when it is released to start working on my site?  Usually, once a product goes beta, there are no huge feature breaking changes, and just bug fixes, documentation, etc.  I'm really not looking for someone to say, "Ya, go ahead and use beta software for your site!". :)  Just maybe, some comments on the chances that using the beta won't be a complete wast of time.

Thanks

Alberts -

This question has been asked and answered many times in various forms.

There will be an upgrade path from 1.0.8 to 1.5 --> SEVERAL core devs, above, have reassured us of this.

There is no estimated date that v 1.5 will be available for production.

Even you seem to understand that noone in their right mind would tell you to use the beta software.

So, honestly, what answer are you really after? LOL!!!!

Here's what I would do ---> I would go with the current production release v 1.0.8. Especially if I wanted to go live mid-June since there is no v 1.5 release date, I'd take care of my own release date needs.

Amy

--> Alberts - I am going to tease you a little bit more...I looked at your five posts. Two of them are about template problems using the Alpha v. 1.5 release!  :P I think you should load up 1.0.8 and work in there for awhile while the devs finish their massive changes! Don't you? It's a nice release!!!!

Alberts...

My opinion...go with 1.0.8, assuming the site you are putting up is a "production" site.  Even if a stable release of 1.5 appears prior to June, there will still be good chance that there will be some lingering issues..there always are.

And, there will no doubt still be third-party modules, components, and plugins that will need to play catch-up in order to work properly with 1.5.

HarryB wrote:My opinion...go with 1.0.8,

I fully agree on that one, I just cannot imagine what it is that you definitly need form 1.5 that you cannot do in 1.0.8 and even more.. why one cannot build one's site in 1.0.8.... What is the rush? Be patient my young padawans..  ;)

I guess I will leave 1.5 alone for now.  It's not really my need to be on bleeding edge, but I really need the UTF feature and the feature that lets a user rejoin a timed out session (ie. 3065 : A revision to remember).

I'm not sure if it is in 1.5 or slated for 1.6 (which I still think should be called 2.0) but there is some framework changes that will make it much easier to integrate 3rd party applications into Joomla so that both can use the same userlist.

But the truth is until VBull Devs recognize the need to make it easy to integrate thier product into other CMS' it will always be a difficult thing to do!

It's a commercial product and the only way to get that to happen is if the people who buy and own licenses actually push them into making it.

J! 1.5 and vBulletin

Wait a minute -- have I missed something??  Is vBulletin going to get special support in J! 1.5, or does the "yes" here just mean that the existing third-party bridge components will be upgraded to support J! 1.5?

Thanks...

No what it means is Joomla login routines will be structured in such a way that it will be easier to bridge two different logins of two different applications...

By making how Joomla validates login much better and flexible!

Thanks for the clarification.  Glad to hear about the improvement.

Will the new method also address the proxy / session-timeout problem?  Just out of curiosity...  The current fix isn't working very well for me.

"The forthcoming version is much, much more than a minor update — it's a complete rework of the underlying codebase, yet it keeps a high level of backwards compatibility expected for a minor release.  No mean feat!"

What does this mean?  I was just over at facile forms and Peter Koch says that with 1.5 backward compatibility will be broken.  What does this mean for Joomla components?  Are they all going to need major recoding or is there some happy medium?

Thanks

In an effort to move forward it is inevitable that some things will break.  Same idea with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windoes 98, Windows ME (totally useless  ;)) and so forth.  Hopefully 3rd party developers will make necessary changes.  :)
