The logo inspired by a flying bird is more actractive to me.
Logos about feet, hands, people are similar to humanitarian agencies, perhaps.

The difference is that I eliminated some of the people to get away from the mambo shape and that the people are intertwined similar to the photos of the statue posted earlier.
I like thatone very well, except that it has too many similarities with the Microsoft Product family logos.

Deadline for what? The community have to poll the best logos, I think. Moreover I think a gallery for all best ones should be useful, with comments yet. why not?

Google -> joogle -> joogla -> Joomla

a Lawsuit might come from a major known searchengine if you use this logo

I like the idea of the 2 o´s making an eight lying down. (mathematic endless-sign)
It could symbolise that it is open source and a continuing endless work..
but skip the graphics (keep it simple)

Yes.. but we have to limit the time conribution as the official logo to be use is only going to be only one from all hundreds of them. And the logo cannot be change after its been officially use.
Back to my question... when will OSM want to use the logo officially?

With a stand at 10th September's Software Freedom Day it would help if one was selected in time for that.

I'am afraid the hole has nothing to do with any "eye" explanation, but is just a consequence of the natural curve of the palm when the hand was placed on the rock.
Hi Jean-Marie,
i like your handlogo and your words about the background. I don´t like the "rosty blood red" very much und i don´t like "black" very much; other than for text. Also each one has (and may have) his or her own interpretation of the logo. My first assoziations with "your" Hand were Eric Clapton´s "I shot the sherrif" and Quentin Tarrantino in "From dusk till dawn". But maybe that´s a reason for my personal "red/black" aversion (or vice versa). The more you have to explain, the least it´s a good symbol imho. For the reasons you (and many others also) have already explained, i appreciate to take a hand as the basic principle. Peek´s is my personal favourite.
Best regards
Joern
The rusty look is the original color as you have seen.
The variation on black was to check the effect as seen on the joomla site as is now.
These colors could be easily changed however.
(I don't have all your Western Movie culture
)

My impression is that now we are out of control...
Trese is NO followed history, a "path" of what said and "approved" by community up-to-now. All seems to me an endless repeating new (but old) post. Is it possible to have a little summary of what we have "in our hands" now???????????????

Hi all,
It´s my first post here, and my first contribuition also.
Here is my logo and slogan proposal, based largely on the comments I read on this thread, maybe the font is a bit too "stiff" but it´s balanced by the more "organic" symbol that describes the modular nature of Joomba.

Brian - and core review team and all of those designers out there banging out ideas in their favorite graphic tool.
While not a designer per se', I can offer a few words of wisdom from some a very serious and successful ad agency that I know.
Purpose-Based Branding
Purpose-based Branding is the journey of discovering a company's core purpose and then bringing it to life with language that inspires and motivates all audiences. --snip-- marketing poop here. --snip--
So what is this thing called purpose?
Purpose is a definitive statement about the difference that a company (project) and it's leaders and employee are trying to make in the world.
If you have a purpose and can articulate it with clarity and passion, everything makes sense, everything flows. You feel good about what you're doing and clear about how to get there. If you don't have a clear and easy-to-articulate core purpose for the work that you do, everything probably feels a bit chaotic, harried and maybe even meaningless. What you produce may be completely indistinguishable from everything else in the marketplace. Without purpose as your North Star, your company's (Project's) strategies change every other year and your work life is probably full of anxiety and uncertainty. Whether or not you have a purpose that you can articulate and execute, every company (project) and individual is capable of having one. Having a purpose is necessary to thrive over time.
--snip-- more marketing poop --snip
Point is, define exactly what purpose this new logo/slogan and look/feel is to convey and how you're going to use it.
Business like, playful, colorful, appeal to all or exactly what would you like it to do?
Then, bullet out the areas to consider.
- Who's the logo/slogan for? Your group and the core dev environment vs the customer (End users who deploy your solution.)
- Logo/slogan must convey purpose and spell out your message & be distinguishable (Kind of like your name. 8-)
- Must look good as tag line on web site for users
- Must look good in different color spaces for screen & print. CMYK vs RGB
- Must look good on a t-shirt (trade-shows and fundraising. 8-)
- Can be used as a favicon
- Must Scale up/down depending on use, since most of us use the core tech for other purpose and only drop a logo/copyright etc at the bottom, it must scale small.
My vote so far: Hand themes put forth by peekaboo and infograf have a lot of potential.

Hi All
As a CMS maybe there can be a referrence to content and management.
Something a folders for the content and the hand for the management.
Something like this.
