Paper-Less Homework Component

Hello there!
I currently work at a small (<200 students) educational institute.  This past year, we have moved to a paper-less system, where it is required to have a laptop, download and upload your homework via our built-from-the-ground-up-php Intranet.  I am checking out joomla, as it seems to be alot eaiser to maintain and add new features to replace our current Intranet.  The only component that I cannot seem to find is the whole upload/download homework, comment on it, etc.. I am not interested in moodle, as our Intranet is alot more than just uploading/downloading hw (such as a place to post pictures, for sale items, chat, ect...) and moodle seemed to be only for the whole classwork concept--Does anybody have any ideas?
thanks!

Honestly, I'd say...use Moodle! It can do everything you mentioned!

Maybe not what you want to hear... 8)

Why not use both? I use Joomla, Moodle, Coppermine, and Squirrelmail. There is a lot more to moodle than uploading/downloading homework. You can make public spaces with it.

I'm not familiar with moodle so it may be the better answer here, but why not use one of the many Form components?

you can easily create a form for each homework assignment. and reuse them!
Many also support file attachements (I know Phil a form does).

But if you did this via forms you could reuse the assignments and keep a database of the submissions.
