Hi Folks;

Just to give everyone a heads up:

In order to synchronize the cvs repositories on the scm portion of forge, I'm currently running a synchronize permissions on the box.  If you experience any slowness or any unusual events, please put them in here.  Once Sync perms are done running I will update this thread.

Please include in your reports:

  • Project Name and URL that you are trying to access
  • Time of access attempt
  • What you were doing (logging in, editing a tracker, etc)
  • If you were logged in or logged out
  • Your Joomla Forge username

Thanks so much!

ianw

Hi Brian;

Thanks for the notification:

I just tried to download it, and when using fasterfox, it only took about 2.547 seconds to load the page.  Try again, and let me know if you're still having issues.

Mod note: Troll, it would be nice if you wouldn't post the same reply in all messages regarding Forge.

Not the same message!

Here I say it's slow again!

In the other one, I followed up to ask if there was any plans on mirroring the forge, as that was mentioned in the other thread, and NOT here!

Hi Troll;

I was able to get to forge.joomla.org in under 10 seconds using my wireless card, so I'm unable to replicate your issue.

What project (or artifact/document/file release) were you trying to view or edit?

What Time?

Were you able to get the sourceforge mast or Title in your browser window?

We are looking to get all of the loose threads and issues resolved, so any additional information that you can provide will help me in debugging the issue.

Thanks!

Ian

Yesterday, about 5-10 min before my post I was trying to get this URL:

http://forge.joomla.org/sf/tracker/do/l ... acker.bugs

It took +10 minutes before the page loaded, I think I got a page title after a while, but blank page.

This is on a Mac running FireFox.

After a few minutes waiting, I opened a connection to forge.joomla.org on a XP box using IE7, this also took +10 minutes before anything was loading on the page.

I have 8MB ADSL connection, have server in US and the forge is the only web page/side I have had any problems with the last couple of months.
Yes, the forge have been more or less unusable for me the last couple of months.
I'm not there everyday, but every time the last months when I'm looking for an update or something new, I get extremely frustrated about how slow the forge is!!

Today it took only a couple of minutes to load  ;D
But I did not need anything from the forge today  :(

Just checked, and site from above link showed up in 4 seconds. Not bad  ;)

Tried same link as above, and this http://forge.joomla.org/sf/sfmain/do/home for almost 30 minutes now, nothing!!!

Even the forum and main page loads slow today!

This is very frustrating and extremely bad publicity for Joomla when people can't download anything, not even connect to the forge!!

Edit: While waiting for this post to show, I tried using a proxy in Boston to connect to the forge, no luck with that either.

The forum downtime and the Forge are two seperate things. The forum went down because somehow the SMF tables are locking themselves, this crashes Mysql in the end. This affects the forum and the extensions site, as these are both on the same physical server. Brad did receive a patch for SMF this, which seemed to help.... until today that is. We are working on this. Don't expect a permanent solution today or tomorrow, we don't want to bandaid things without actually solving the cause.

Here is traceroute, so you can see that there is not much wrong with the network, but something seriously wrong with the server or the software used for the forge:

Still no luck to get the forge to load  ???

Are there no one who are in charge of the forge, someone that can contact the host or something. Just want to solve this problem that have been going on way to long now!!!!!!!!!!
Some one who can access log files, to check if everything is OK with the server, load on server, if there is something physical wrong with the server?
Is this a shared server?

I'm also wondering if there is a censorship regarding this topic also?

I received a e-mail alert with this message about 30 min after my previous post.
When I a few minutes after receiving this mail, I come back to here to find no new post????

Here is the message:

The text of the reply is shown below:

same again from here now.This really is getting quite daft. there is clearly a problem either with the server or with sfee. Looks tome as if they cant handle the traffic and memory resources are getting used up.

More replies may be posted, but you won't receive any more notifications until you read the topic.

Troll;

The forge is hosted on two dedicated servers at our hosting facility in the SF area.

As much as I appreciate your troubleshooting, there are many different variables in play here.  To not bore everyone, I'll only touch on the most important:

  • In the JVM, there are only about 200 threads available.  You can think of this analogy like a bus that only has 125 seats available.  Once everything's filled up, you're either going to have to stand up and wait for a seat to become available, or wait for the next bus to come around the corner.  To add a little more insight, there are only 256 threads available by default in the Apache web server.
  • As more people hit the forge, there is more load on the server.  (the bus goes slower).  Eventually, enough people have their requests filled, and the bus will speed up and get back 'on schedule' again.

While I understand that this is frustrating for everyone, there is only so much that we can do from an application management standpoint -- we can add more threads, however, without additional memory, that would allow more people to access the forge, but everyone's access times would be horrible, as there would not be enough memory to serve everything from memory, and a lot of swapping would occur.  Likewise, we can remove some threads, and the forge would be faster, but, we'd introduce more issues (network speed, cpu load, jvm constraints).

The best that I can do is reassure everyone that I am aware of the situation, and that I am actively monitoring it.  It would be rather unfair for me to just restart the application server every time the load gets high, as that would interrupt what those 100+ people are currently doing, and then there would be more load as they tried to reconnect.

Well its not available again at 17:00GMT

IMHO this is really beginning to effect Joomla. everyday there are new users unable to download joomla. New releases cant be made. And judging the joomla 1.5 changelog it is effecting development there as well. There have been less commits (at least half) this week than at any tie in the last 8 weeks.

I came to Joomla for the first time tonight. I was keen to try it, having seen it working elsewhere. Through no fault of my own, I have only tonight to implement a standard CMS on my server. Too bad there's no mirror, try Kent University, they mirror lots of stuff, and on JANET too...

If you're looking to download the core Joomla! application try:

http://forge.joomla.org/static/

That contains the core Joomla Application, and shouldn't be affected by the Joomla Forge Load, and should be available if the forge is down.
