Regarding, "It has it’s own index, that is updated each hour":
Does it mean that it takes about 30 minutes (average) before the content of a new message is indexed & can be found?

Correct Peter. Sorry, that is one trade off for magnificent performance. Moderator searches, ie user posts and so on, will not go thru Sphinx though. Just messages/posts.

I just did a few test searches and it found way more than before etc. and faster
hopefuly this will remove alot of posts that can now be resolved with a search

I hope so.. and so much faster and less resource intensive.

The instructions are all in the sphinx distribution. Check the SMF forums for more details.

The forum search at Joomla is oddly fast considering how large the database must be.
