Event Volunteer Sign-Ups: No Workable Extensions?

I have scoured the www for a Joomla extension (or any kind of free, web-based solution) for managing volunteer sign-ups for community events. Striking out in a big way.

I'm halfway tempted to code one myself, as I'm sure there would be a great use for this with civic groups, churches, or even scheduling job shifts, but... until I'm doing this for a site that is not a pro-bono effort, it's hard to justify the time. Plus, I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I'm missing a solution here... would prefer to have it be a Joomla extension, but I'd work with anything at this point.

Does anyone have any leads/thoughts, either for an extension that already does, or could be worked with to accomplish most of the following? You'll be my favorite person if you do.
Wish list of abilities for Event Volunteer Sign-Up Extension:
- Volunteers can see a list or calendar of volunteer opportunities
- The can see how many availabe volunteer 'slots are available', with times (and possibly who else is signed up)
- They can easily choose a volunteer slot and sign up
- The volunteer will or can recieve a confirmation/reminder e-mail of their commitment.

Simple enough, huh? But everything seems to fall between a pure calendar, and event registration, each of which mutually excludees some of the needed features.

If you can help, you 'da bomb.

The first one can be done using a calendar. CiviEvent exposes an iCal feed of events for a date range than can be imported into any modern day calendar (like google calendar).

The second issue will need a hack to expose in CiviEvent

The above two are part of CiviEvent, a person can sign up for any event that has available slots

I am using an event sign in calendar that interfaces with Paypal called Eventlist, but I think it would be easy to modify for your purposes. It has the minimum and maximum number of registrations and I think by making the event cost $0 it would work for you.

Another thing I like is the ability to capture more data about the attendees (a bit tricky to set up) and to have event locations with a map link (Google).

Best of luck

Joomlearn.com is about to release it's new component Registration Pro. This registration component lets you post your events and accept paid/free registrations and collect information from the registrants to an event.
