Asked same and few other similar questions a long time ago in another topic, I doubt you'll get an answer.

This label will show up if the extension can meet a set average of visits pr. day.

What exactly is that "set average of visits per day"?

I took a liberty of looking more closely on this "hot" icon. I compared 2 extensions

ExtA no "hot" icon ever
                1 day change 135
ExtB has "hot" icon there for weeks now
1 day change 63 (same day)

Are you sure this "hot" thing works? Is calculation done dynamically on each list load or once a day at midnight?

You got me interested in this again  :)
Although i really don't think this is of some big importance, i too would like to know the precise way in which this is calculated.
Not urgent nor important thing though, just to stress it again  :)

More detailed extension comparison:

                                                Day 1 change : Day 2 change
ExtA never had a hot icon            135                      146
ExtB has hot icon for weeks now    63                        88

Seems like once ext gets hot icon it remains there, so it does NOT work and I would like to request that you to take it away immediately, till you fix this functionality.

Hi Prutkar,

This 'HOT' tag obviously works slightly different than you expect it to. But it actually works as its supposed to.  :)
Basically this is based on how "hot" an extension is considered from submission date till now.
This is not a day-to-day change in popularity.

The calculation of an extension tagged as 'HOT' is simply done by: 'All time visits'/'Days listed' > 'Set average'.
New listings are likely to be considered 'HOT' when lots of users visit in the first week they are listed (when they are profiled by being listed at the 'New Extensions' list'). The popular ones will keep the 'HOT' tag in the long term simply by being popular/high rated/well reviewed, and therefore most likely also well visited.

New suggestions for improved and perhaps even better or different tags and 'Top lists' are always welcomed and evaluated.
Sometimes suggestions are included for better funtionality, sometimes not.

well, if this is your idea of "hot" property, you definitely should rethink your "most popular" section. As two of those differ only in 'set average' not present in "most popular". (or the other way around, rethink hot property)

This is why you have all new extensions listed as most popular (which is really a bogus information) and they are marked as hot as well (which is more true then most popular).

In my opinion "hot" extension should be a recent high interest in extension (short term).
On other hand "most popular" should be a long term interest in extension.

If you read the other thread http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,147364.0.html I listed there some links to consider (May be these two threads could be combined).

When TOP "most popular" extension has ONLY 2.5 stars, 16 votes and 5 reviews I would hardly consider it popular, definitely not most popular and definitely definitely not top most popular.

Hey, I´m actually not trying to argue against your strong points made  ;)

This thread asked: " When is extension labeled as hot?". And this quesion was answered  :)

* Your input on the menu labelling, and whats listed as most popular is taken note of. Adjustments may be needed on this matter.

no no :-) no arguing here :-) my only problem with all this is that you took this recommendations a year ago using email I have sent and nothing has been done about it even so your response was same "strong points/will take in consideration"

Why I am still on it is simple: basic reason for extensions area existence is grouping development around Joomla, but more valuable to the community than that in my opinion is the added value of offering a proper advice to new visitors on what extensions are good, popular, preferred. That is why you have all these ranking systems in place which I am criticizing.

Simple math. There are more than 1400 extensions on the Joomla! Extensions Directory. To create any type of manual 'good/bad/popular/whatever' tag is going to cost thousands of extra working hours per year, and this is besides subjective questions like: what is good? what is preferred? what is good quality? What is secure? This would be a subject for an ideal world scenario. When looking at the Extensions Directory, it's a brilliant resource that got a lot better since it has started. Are we looking into approving it........ always. I've seen how much time and effort has been taken on the Extensions Directory. You might not want to believe me, but I can safely assure you that with the thousands of hours spent on it by the current team, it couldn't have been any better.

Only manual type of 'whatever' should be Editors pick, which I believe is manual. That section is nice but with no review or similar type of editors comments why editors selected that extension in that group, how does it compare to other extensions in the same group and/or what features extensions have, pros/cons etc. With no editors credentials (expertise or knowledge or something to show qualified editor to recommend anything) that section is almost useless and community has no reason to even consider it or even worth it is misleading.

Any other type of 'whatever' should be done automatically and that's what computers are there for (we do not want thousand of hours being spent on something that can be done automatically).

I am not requesting manual 'whatever' but adjustment/improvement of automatic ranking system calculations for Joomla extensions area.

May be I am only one in the community who even think of this, either way if my points are really strong it would be nice to see something being done about it (mainly because this is the core of added value of whole extensions area).
