Great news. I wonder how any registered users there are if we also add all the members on the non-english support forums. Especialy for those languages like french whihc are less represented here at forum.joomla.org.

Perhaps then we will be close to beiag "the largest Open Source focused forum on the planet" as we have a long way to go to catch up with our friends at linuxquestions.org

100k! It is nothing short of amazing. Just think about it. Joomla! version 1.0 was announced August 16, 2005. That was over a year and a half ago. And even then, it was essentially a rebranding of an already-released version of Mambo. So for the better part of two years, a community has grown around a fundamentally static web CMS.

100k! I suspect that it is more of an expression of hope following the fall of Mambo - and perhaps an echo of 'who was here then but have long since left'. How many have moved on to other solutions after giving up the wait for 1.1? Oh, that's 1.5 now. Perhaps we should call it 2.0. How many of the 100k have posted in the last 3 months? How do dormant accounts die? Yes, it is amazing indeed.

Hey All,

I'll add mine to the above - congrats to all and thank you to those that really work hard - and often get grief rather than thanks!!

@Grisbald - I'm sorry dude I don't know what your beef is with Joomla (I can guess) and I'm not trying to stir but I will say this. I don't post that often - take a look at my profile - but I certainly read and learn much from the guys who spend time and effort on all this. Yes there may be dormant accounts and I'm sure there are a fair few but perhaps we should try not to see the statistic as a statistic more an expression of interest in what is so far an amazing testament to what OSS can and could do.

Take it easy all and keep up the hard work!

Jon.

ummmm...  I don't think that Jammie07 ever activated the account...  I tried to find the user in the user list, and it goes right from jammer to jammin...

I think our plan has been thwarted!  We will have to find again you the 100 000 user was.

I still wonder who is the lucky one to get the goody bag but anyways congrats to all of us as we all share the big milestone collectively.  :pop

As the announcement noted, one of the qualifying factors for choosing an open-source solution is the size and quality of the community that supports it.  I can't count the number of times where I haven't been able to find an answer to a problem in the official manuals, but Joomla!'s community forums have hooked me up.

Congrats to everyone on reaching this milestone.

And GO, DEVELOPERS, GO! on version 1.5 ... we're all anxiously awaiting this major update.

jonflgiles wrote:@Grisbald - I'm sorry dude I don't know what your beef is with Joomla ...

@jonflgiles - no need for you to be sorry Jon. I should be the one apologizing. The post was uncharacteristic of me. I've been involved with Mambo/Joomla! since before the Robert Castley era and the golden years of version 4.5. That release was a significant tipping point because it introduced powerful features and usability enhancements over previous versions. The Forum's 100k milestone is an expression of the popularity and interest in Joomla! predominately amongst the users. For many of us, it is also an expression of hope for the future of Joomla! The milestone got me reflecting on the history of the Joomla! project and the long lead time to another 'tipping-point' experience - for users.

The strength of the Joomla! community is also reflected in its tolerance for the odd outburst of frustration and angst, like mine. As a community-based FOSS project, Joomla! relies on the synergies between the developers and the users. To a certain extent, I think that this synergy has been denied by the developers' desire to release the perfect product. Smaller, more frequent releases would facilitate user involvement and arguably grow the community faster and in more constructive directions. As an experienced project manager in the IM/IT domain, I know how seductive scope creep can be. I also know how difficult software estimation is.

I blogged (grisbald.net) on the topic of community size as a metric of FOSS project success /health. I think this is a useful thing to think about. It is one thing to celebrate a milestone, and another to understand its meaning. But then I think about things like this, and understand that others may not. Can a FOSS community of 10k be as or even more successful? Why? How? Worth thinking about I think.

So, sorry for upsetting the celebration a bit. I wasn't as constructive as I probably should have been with my comment. Sarcasm is a pretty arrogant way to make a point or solicit positive feedback.

UPDATE: Drupal has announced its own 100k milestone too. Interesting. AmyStephen has been blogging about Drupal, WordPress and Joomla! on opensourcecommunity.org. Her latest is http://www.opensourcecommunity.org/2007 ... ource-cmss and shows Jooma! declining while Drupal and WordPress are strengthening using Alexa. Back in February, Amy posted Google Trends data on her own blog indicating the rise of Joomla! (partially the migration of Mambo users) in relation to Drupal and WordPress - see http://community.nebraska.edu/amyblog/i ... wordpress/. This is interesting data. Some might question the value of comparing FOSS projects in this way - it isn't a competition after all. Benchmarking is a useful method of assessing quality and progress and I think that this data raises some interesting speculation. Thanks Amy.

Is that since 1 Jan 2007 or 7 Jan 2001 or 1 Jul 2001?

Could not be 2001, that would make Joomla 6 years old.

:pop I am so glad, I was actually going to use Mambo for this website but my wife, Ms. Deepa always liked Joomla and then I was struggling with Mambo and then I saw the amount of extensions available for Joomla i said let me chuck Mambo and go for Joomla, It is really excellent the way this community is sustained with all the software being free and works wonderfully well...

You will all be surprised that this is also our first website using a Content Management Software and our clients thought we could not do it, we did... I am still struggling to learn using components..... :P

May we reach 1 million and our (Deepa and I) thanks...
