Can we make a thread in the "general" forum

Post by leolam » Sat Jun 16, 2007 8:35 am

Just for the sake of not having to answer thousands of questions:

Can we make a thread in "General-Forum" where we post the 3rd party extensions which are not longer available on either Extension-site or at all?  :'(

Examples:
we have lost so far with a quick reference:

  • Open-Sef
(http://j-prosoolution seized to exist since Marko left)
  • JD_Wordpress
(see above)
  • VisualRecommend
(still accessible at http://demo.visualclinic.fr)
  • AkoTweaked SE
(still accessible at http://demo.visualclinic.fr)
  • AlphaContent
(still accessible at http://demo.visualclinic.fr)
  • Adressbook 1.2
still accessible at http://demo.visualclinic.fr)
  • JBAM
(see message: http://jbam.joomlasolutions.com)
  • Clexus Private Messaging
(http://clexus.com)

just to mention a few.........

This needs clearly listed to avoid mountains of questions and I believe the "foundation-forum" is not the right place since end users look for solutions and nothing foundation related ;)

some more ct's

Leo

Leo,

Why don't you start it here--which you have already done-- and then the mods can figure out what forum it should go in.
Read your words before posting and think about how other people will read them. Be polite. Be kind. Be constructive. Say thank you.

I suggest that we move this thread to Extensions Directory forum, since this isn't really a foundation matter.

Hi Leo,

The extensions aren't listed of several different reasons.

Open Sef hasn't been listen in the Extensions Directory for a very long. It was unpublished on the developers request and the developer are welcome to re-submit it.
See the following post - http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,98757.0.html

About the extensions from visualclinic - they are temporary unpublished and will be re-published in a near future.

JBAM has been unpublished since the developer has stopped the development of it.

Clexus, I'm sorry, but I haven't any information about why it isn't published. Have it ever been published?

I hope it helps :)

this is not about the extension listings at all...This is about the GPL-issue taken by 'core' and 'foundation' and subsequent decisions by 3PD's to stop marketing their product:
Clexus
Dear visitors, Following the discussion in joomla community regarding the commercial software, we are sorry to announce the withdrawal of our products from sales. Thank you for your understanding. Support for current clients will continue however.

Open-Sef (j-prosolution.com)
This is the placeholder for domain j-prosolution.com. If you see this page it's maybe because the site is currently closed by the owner.

This is not about their decision or core/foundation decisions..that's being discussed in other forums already more than extensive..this is about informing users whats not longer available so we dont have the answer hundreds of posts.....  ;)

cheers...hope this clarifies

Well, it's still very early to know which extensions that won't continue to get developed or will be discontinued. This is still very fresh and we have to give the affected developers time to find their solution and not only what the feelings are at the moment. We have to remember that Joomla! has a huge userbase with millions of websites.

It looks like OpenSEF and the developers others extensions have been withdrawed because issues around GPL and Markos resignation from the Core. The amount of users that use Open Sef is huge and I hope Marko can reconsider. It can't been that it was withdrawed because that the licence was incompatible with GPL, since OpenSEF is released under GPL. What I tried to point since you pointed out which extensions weren't availbale either on JED or at all, that Open Sef wasn't published there.

I don't know why Clexus was removed by the developer, if it has with GPL discussion or not, but Clexus was removed for 2 weeks ago, before of the announcement.

We unpublish quite many extensions, both permanent and temporarily from JED because of different issues. It can be based on reports from users and we need to check with the developers before they can be republished. Many times the developer just stop to develop an extension and their site dissapears and then we unpublish it. It's very common that extensions get unlisted from JED, in other hand, we got over 160 new extensions submitted and listed only last month from 3rd party developers where a clear majority were developed with GPL license and other GPL compatible licenses.

I think it's important not to stir up the community. I think we all need some time for to see what happends and talk with the developers. Even if an extensions disseaper today, it can come back later. I'm certain OpenSEF will be one of those since the userbase is just so huge and it's GPL.
