Hi there well that's a good beginning!
I was thinking maybe you could add a sticky post with a link to the tutorials Amy talked about?
Or other tutorials and places related to this initiative...

ps: I don't know about free food , it's hard to stick into the cable...

I am trying to not get ahead of the forum planners but I am anxious
back in the Mambo days I modified the login module on a stock install to read a users inbox from a PMS system and flash a little graphic to the user.
Clicking it took them to their inbox.
I know I know not much. But it wet my appetite.
Since then I have studied most of the PMS systems and loved how they worked but lacked the ability to write one from the ground up.
Since I am the business owner for our software at work, I spend lots of time working with the programmers. My strength is in understanding a users needs and then directing the software development to fill that need.
Our system is not that robust, so I extend the application using microsoft access as a rapid development tool. Then when we have what we need for my staff I deliver a prototype to the developers.

I have always wanted a little more than what most PMS systems have offered. So I am excited about seeing what I can create using the new API

We need a PMS. That might be a good way to think about your question "What killer component is missing that we could adopt as an ongoing group project?" is to look at some of the popular extensions available for 1.0.x that would continue to be popular in 1.5.

It might also be smart to think about really easy ones.

Your questions are good. I am pondering. 

One thing I have often thought, feel free to disagree
once you learn how to
create tables
get data into tables
pull data out of tables
change data in tables
display data

You can pretty much build from there and make it as complex as you want. (are my database roots showing?)
the MVC concept seems to make that easier from what I read.

Maybe a quick how to on doing that might be a good start dunno

coming from outside of Joomla, and thus my viewpoint, i just couldn't believe there is no such group, and i was like " what in heavens are the gods of joomla doing ?" don't they see all these worshippers beggin to be blessed ! heh lol..

i see a whole ocean of cool coders willing to code as a hobby, willing to contribute, voluntarily and Joomla doesn't even have a room ( to steal a phrase from AOL ) for these people,  not to mention red carpet welcome.

my oh my, you guys just don't know what you're missing !.

i'm very happy to see this goup and hope it wil grow tremendously. there are also other things that i see coming up in future as far as digital technology is concerned.

they way i look at it, there has to be a joomla in every home    enjoy !

lol...it does seem so, the roots i mean. i haven't seen anyone take it from this in joomla, but then i'm new so i guess i haven't seen much.

For Amy you asked what could be the killer component missing. Actually I think first about PMS and gallery. Cause there are a lot of both but for all they are kind of abandonned (uddeIM, PMSII, Missus, JIM for PMS, Zoom gallery or others, but for gallery, maybe rsgallery will stand out ) (But this might be another problem cause it might be so good to see in joomlacode which projects need help rather than doing a whole new one???)

You'll find a 'sticky' topic in this forum that you can post extension ideas.  We are really looking for smaller projects for our initial work.  Keep in mind this is Coding 101; and these larger projects are just not going to be suitable for this group at this time.  We want something that we can accomplish in a reasonable amount of time, won't need a great deal of support work, and can give everyone a chance who wants to participate. We will need something to work on that's not going to take 100's of hours to code.

Yes I totally agree I just went into thinking about killer components as proposed above but I did not really think it should be done here.

It's no problem.  I do eventually want to see some larger projects, but I want to try and avoid ending up with a 'closed' project that is going to leave a lot of 'late-comers' feeling they missed the boat.. so to speak.  I'd rather circle around a few times and pick up people along the way.  Once we feel a group is ready, they can go on (if they choose) to some larger projects, and we'll start a new smaller group and do the rounds again.

I envision several smaller projects going on at once in little teams. By small, I would like to see them take no more than a month. Over time, as we get bigger, maybe we could tackle a larger effort. As Tim stated, we have to be flexible enough to let newcomers in to learn.

My question is this... do we want several projects going on at once? Or, do we want to have everyone working on one project at a time?

Everybody on one project would be overwhelming unless it was something large like a forum where you need lots of bits and pieces. I would recommend smaller projects that appeal to different people. Teams of around 5 sounds good to me.
