Hi, I have started to notice that people are listing plugins as J1.5 when they only work in legacy mode. It this correct method for listing? It is very annoying. You think you have found what you're looking for until you try and install it!

We are very aware of this and we are going to upgrade the JED so the developers can specifiy if an extension run 1.0.x, 1.5 legacy and/or 1.5 native.

Obvious a hot topic, since I just posted on a different, but similar thread and noticed this one

Do you think the new JED will be ready for Joomla! 1.5 final? I know it's been on the cards for at least the last 2 months.
Speaking purely as a new user to Joomla! I find choosing extensions for 1.5 a real nightmare. Which is a shame because Joomla! is awesome!

You will find that it will be slow going for J1.5 extensions for a while. Based on past experience I would anticipate 12 months before J1.5 extensions get into full swing. That is only my opinion though!

I'm not sure if it was clear I was talking in response to the difficulty with finding native 1.5 extensions.
Nothing can happen until the JED has been updated to differentiate between 1.0.x, 1.5 legacy and 1.5 native extensions.
It also bears the question if a team is to sort through the extensions, or if the listing are going to be patchy for a some time.

Yes I understood. Even with the feature to differentiate between J1.5 (legacy and or native) still limits you to what extensions are available in the first place.  I have heard comments from several developers that they won't even consider porting their components to J1.5 native until J1.5 is stable.

I know there are some developers out there who may not even develop J1.5 native extensions period. I think this is based on the assumption that take-up of J1.5 will be slow. I personally think that could be a mistake. Once you have worked with J1.5 you are hooked.

There was a similar phenomena when Mambo and Joomla split. There are still some components that produce Mambo versions.

Be prepared to wait for the right component. Good luck with your websites.

IMHO putting the JED framework in ASAP, will ensure that close-future written 1.5 native extensions are ready to be received. I know there are only a handful of 1.5 native extensions right now, but this is sure to change at an increasing rate, as we've reached one of the last release candidates, and the final release of 1.5 is in sight.

I've read about this too, and I totally agree with you. The excitement regarding the release candidates is extremely high, and the take up of Joomla! 1.5 seems (to me) to be really speeding, considering again, we're at release candidate level.

I'm designing web sites for a couple of charities. With no budget Open Source is perfect. Joomla! 1.5 is the choice for it's user-friendly design, for user's who are not necessarily computer illiterate in more than just the basics of a word processor.
