search function

Post by jeffhoneyager » Sat Nov 17, 2007 2:49 pm

Forums are a gold mine of information.

I am sure any question I have has been asked and answered many times.

Why is it so time consuming to find the information?

Answer - the search mechanism is old.

I'm sure if someone passionate about search algorithms could revise it good things will happen:

1. forum moderators and contributors would spend much less time answering questions again - and - again
2. users/admins would get their answers more quickly - and their clients/customers would benefit
3. the Joomla footprint gets bigger (from 1 & 2 above)

Also, the searching technology in Joomla can be improved.  Today when someone does a search they assume the results are sorted by relevancy (search word density, LSI, or other).

thanks

Peace & Joy,
Jeff Honeyager

Alternative is if you have the Google search box on your web browser or you use the advanced search setting on Google search itself is to specify the joomla.org Web site(s). On Google search box just add the words you are keen on looking for adn add "site:joomla.org" or to narrow it down "site:forum.joomla.org" (without the quote marks). On advanced search just complete the domain name entry half way down the page in addition to the other requirements.

Because the forums are not designed around the Issues users have.  They are based on relatively unhelpful hierarchies.
