Building a Component of an existing application

I'm looking for an application database component for my homebrew beer recipes. I have found this website that I would like to modify and use with joomla. http://www.brewthology.com
Where should I start? Does anyone have any suggestion on how this task could be accomplished?
- i would need this app use my Current template.
- Use my current jos_user table for my new/current users
