ARTIO JoomSEF and JoomSEF - Patched Version from Kanga Internet

The
ARTIO JoomSEF description in JED contain this editor note:
This extension by default includes an advertisement in website's META Generator field when installed.
I just wondering why the
JoomSEF - Patched Version from Kanga Internet does not contain this notice too.
Because:
Code: Select all
<meta name="Generator" content="Joomla! - Copyright (C) 2005 - 2006 Open Source Matters. All rights reserved.
JoomSEF SEO by Kanga Internet (http://www.kangainternet.com) - Web Design" />
and the footer:
Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.joomla.org">Joomla!</a> is Free Software released under the GNU/GPL License.<br><span>
<a href="http://www.kangainternet.com/search-engine-marketing.html">Web Marketing</a>
| <a href="http://www.kangainternet.com/content-management-system.html">Content Management System</a>
| <a href="http://www.kangainternet.com">Web Site Design</a>
| <a href="http://www.kangainternet.com">Online Marketing</a>
| <a href="http://www.kangainternet.com">Web Design</a></span></div>
I'm not really sure what is Patched in this Version

Neo

Hi neo_fox,
Just read the description of the Patched version once again and think it obvious why its not needed for us to add a note.
The big difference here is that the one extension do not mention these hidden ads, and the other patched extension do write directly in their listing description that they do include links but also how to get a version without these links.
To me it sounds like giving the end user a fair amount of info before installing.

I just think that this sentence
"This extension by default includes an advertisement in website's META Generator field when installed."
applies 100% to this extension too.
But this is Your decision

Neo

Seems like the Kanga group pretty much ending up being just like the original author of this extension.

But he has good explanation:
The reason this has been done is to try and reach a greater audience with the free version while increasing Kanga's links.
I just don't know how this links:
Web Marketing
| Content Management System
| Web Site Design
| Online Marketing
| Web Design
should helps to increase the popularity of this SEF-Extension

I do understand why he did it and that I don't have a problem with what he did. The problem I have is that he didn't give the user the option to remove his ad information.

Which brings us back to what I said earlier Kanga and Artio are no different except he's promoting himself whereas Artio is promoting something that has no bearing whatsoever with this extension.
Credibility would add to his name if he offered a way to remove it. Of course it's his choice just as much as it's our choice to either use it or not.

Hi Guys
I've been pushing this for a while:
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=262&t=242770
This kind of advertising does Joomla's credibility no good and we'd be better not to list guilty extensions on Joomla.org.

That's a great idea to make this known in the extensions directory.
I'm disappointed that Kanga have done this, I agree with the above posts that they are no better than Artio - and in fact it's really worse as they're taking another product, not doing any development, and just changing the ads!
It should be noted that when I downloaded the previous supposedly ad-free versions, they too contained ads. Just a bit of info in case that helps someone else!

Again, you don't have to use Kanga's Artio's SEF. I for will no longer use it just for the very fact stated above. Usually when I see these kind of marketing tactics by companies or individuals, they are usually fairly desperate in getting the edge on the competition. If this is not the case with Kanga, then maybe they can show some great credibility on their part by providing a way to remove the ad?
If it's just wanting recgonition then by all means they can put the credit in the back-end if need be but don't force ads in the code on the front-end unless it's not GNU but instead a commerical copy which can offer a brand-free licensing in which they should then fully support it the component.
I am all about being successful but as it was stated earlier by you:
in fact it's really worse as they're taking another product, not doing any development, and just changing the ads!
That speaks volume.

There is a thread around here somewhere where Kanga first decided to fork the project because of the hidden links.
I was greatly impressed at the time.. "here we have an honorable man trying to make the www a better place" .. instead, he's embraced the devil he spat on.

I guess the follow-up question is ... should this be listed on the Extensions directory?
If it makes no changes to the code apart from changing the adverts, shouldn't it be removed?

There will most likely be a new rule against hidden and unethical behaviour in JED and I think then we automatically solve this matter.

It is really great idea.
I cannot believe that this guys having no problems with users.
We have in the SOBI2 (really) small and decent "Powered by Sigsiu.NET" link. In the early version of SOBI2 it was not possible to set it off in the backend. And even if this link has had an id, so it was very simple to set if off with CSS style, and we have described this procedure, many users reproached us this.
Therefore we have build in a switch in the backend.
BTW I see also many our user whom leaving this link on

A "powered by" or similar links are absolutely not a problem. We have to differ visible and hidden links.

Excellent decision Lorenzo. Thanks also to Alledia, for highlighting and actively pursuing the issues that have now been addressed.
