Mambot or Componet?

Hey everyone,
I am wanting to modify the registration script with Joomla. What i'm wanting to do is to have it add certain information into an additional table on my sites database. So for this would I use a Mambot or a componet?
Second question,
How would I modify the Joomla registration page. I simply want to have it display "CID" instead of "Username". Is that possible and how would I go about doing this?
