It would be very helpful if there was a way to apply a "filter" to the extensions section of the site to restrict the listings by Joomla version. I would love to know at a glance which extensions are J!1.5 compatible. :^)

I feel your pain.
At the very least, put up some sort of indicator on the listing page that shows what version the extension is compatible with. I have not had the results I had hoped using the advanced search functionality, which seems to be the only way to filter on Joomla 1.5 compatibility.
Is there something I am missing, or is this just a really big gap in how the extensions are presented?

We have an upgrade of the JED in the pipeline. With this new version you'll be able to see and search on extensions that are 1.0 , 1.5 legacy and 1.5 native compatible.
