One possible cause of very very slow backend login, or timeouts during backend logging in, is the use of the *amboforge rss/xml feed backend module - which brings latest news from that site - this seems to hang the entire site when the feed is not received, and as *amboforge is currently down or very unreliable, this has caused quite a few people problems.

Solution
Try to login, don't worry if it takes minutes just hang in there until you get in.  Use refresh to try again - only if the browser progress indicator disappears indicating the current attempt has failed. If asked by your browser, click okay to resubmit POST data from the login form.

When you do get in - DO NOT be tempted to log out any of the extra versions of 'you' that you will see already logged in. As they are all you - logging out one will kick all of 'you' out - and you will be back to square one.

Instead: go to Modules -> Admin Modules and unpublish the mamboforge module (this is from memory so exact wording may be slightly wrong).

On a good day, with a fair wind at your back, and with a bit of luck, you should now be able to log in and out without hindrance.

Note this bug has been fixed in the imminent Joomla! 1.0 release.

The bug has been corrected by the author of the DOMIT RSS engine which powers the handling of Feed syndication, within the Joomla Core.

The effective workaround is to change the setting in the Mambo database:

- log into cpanel
- go to MySQL databases and the to phpMySQLAdmin at the bottom
- open the mambo database
- open com_module table
- browse and find mamboforge entry
- edit the entry and reset the publish field to zero(0) and press GO
- done!
- log in to your admin site and you should have no problem regarding this issue.

I had this same problem and followed the instructions here.

Still, the administration login would sit and wait, loading... loading... loading...

When I finally got in I realized I had also (at some point) installed the DOCMan News module. Disabling that module fixed the problem for me.

The advice should of course be generalised to include ANY module that utilises an external xml / rss feed.
