Background information?
Posted: Thu Sep 15, 2005 1:03 am
by alandd
I already voted so it doesn't really matter to me but...
I found that I wanted to know background information about each of the logos. Why did the artist choose what they did? What was the idea or meaning behind the graphic? This especially came up for the fish one.
I know that very information is probably in the contest submissions but it would be more convenient to have it right there with the logo on the voting page. I purposefully stopped following all the submissions due to time constraints. There were so many good ones I decided to just wait until the final five came out.
Of course, maybe part of the point is to see get the raw reaction to the logo without additional information. In which case my request would defeat that point.

I agree with Alan, it would be beneficial to each of the logo artists if there was a short explanation included with their logos, as the "story" behind the idea might influence voting beyond the graphic. I had been reading the logo thread daily, and I still had to look back to find the fish info. (which is available in the artists profile (last posts link).
But what I came here to say was....
GOOD LUCK TO THE FINALISTS! These logos are top notch, and I just have not been able to choose as three of my faves are here! Woohooo! LOL, I am very excited about all of this.

Cannot wait for the results, and I am pleased that the community it having a part in this.

What I found frustrating was that I loved some of the graphics but the text didn't appeal.
This then compromised what I would have voted for.

Two of my top 5 made the cut... so at least the decision was easier for me than it would have been than if they'd all made it!

My understanding is that we're voting for the concept, not the exact implementation - and that the winning logo will go through some kind of process of refinement, which I would assume might include changes to the font/typeface used.

My personal favorite didn't make it. There, I said it...whew...
Each one of these logos is interesting. I guess I'll vote...but, in my mind, each one is attached to a different visual meaning than intended for this competition! So, when I vote, my experience will not be the same as others...my family keeps asking why I'm laughing...
Hey, it's all good. I can't believe you passed up the one I wanted, though...

Two out of my top five made it, not bad. Congrats to all the finalists and to those who didn't make it. With 17 pages of great logos it wasn't easy for the dev team just to take out just a handful.

Good Choices! It was hard to vote on just 5. Good job to Dev team on sorting threw all the excellent logos.
May the best logo win!

That made me think... we shouldn't let all those good logos go to waist. A nice logo archive page with all the submitions would be cool. kind of like the google logo archive.

That would be really great. My personal favourite didn't make it either...

I really loved the peacock Logo!

A logo archive would be a great story in the news section.
Demonstrates the breadth of tallent and level of contribution that lives on here.
Adds to the outsiders perceptions that this is not a corporate show but a real community.

When I looked at the 5 logo's I noticed that the slogan already is selected.
Looking at Joomla Fish, it says total cms solutions
So voting for the 'Fish' is voting for the slogan?

late.. but I think that the vote should have used IRV. That would have give you a better idea of the community interest!
BTW.. the one I liked... did not make it to the finals

Cheers!

No your only voting for the logo itself, not the slogan.

But that logo has a slogan embedded!

Are we allowed to comment on these 5 finalists, or could/would that influence some people's votes?
As the deadline to vote is quite short, it might be benefical to massmail the almost 5000 members to get a maximum of votes in before also..?

Three of my fav logos made it there ..... kewl......... by the way there were lots of other cool logos ...... Maybe we can use them and start a official JOOMLA wallpaper ....... So on the main site people can download joomla wallpapers ....... I like this logo particularly
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,4889.0.html it would have made a funny MIRO vs JOOMLA Wallpaper

I'll take no answer (about commenting) for a yes, so, without revealing which one I voted for:
I think the animals are cool.
Not only do they make for nice logos, but we'd also get a mascott (is that how you say..? pet animal..) for the community, opens lots of possibilities..
Initially, I'd have prefered something which included the "community/unite/.." idea, as the name suggests, but thinking about it, the fish or bird might be a better choice and can be used for lots of ideas..

The usage of the not-selected ones should be approved by their authors I guess before talking about reuse (poster, wallpaper or other), or did they surrender any IP when taking part in the contest?

I am impressed with the movement we currently see. Site went up, name then came, site design accomplished, logo being voted on. It's simply great to see this kind of forward progress in such a short period of time. Congratulations to those who have a graphic in the top 5.

Is it just me or does it look like JBird had a little accident? Anyway I’m sure the best design was done by someone among us

I didn't want to say anything but that's what I felt as well. :-)
These were all extremly good logos. Tough to decide.
BTW, a couple of the logos didn't incorporate the TM. The location of the TM seemed to be part of the design to me so that influenced my decision.

No bug here. I did not see the results. It's just obvious when you read the forum you know what people like most. Also I would prefere if the results were public during the vote so we can see the race.

But that would ruin our big announcement
