Wow - no interest? I guess I'll kick things off then...

From the projecst of listed, the two main areas of interest to me are categorisation and access.

Dealing with the latter first, I have read the documenation for the proposed access control software and it does look brilliant, and able to do eveything you could conceivably need. Joomla is good at pretty and a nice interface in the back end would be gratefully received, but what I would need to see implemented is mode groups. Ideal for me these would be categorised into public/private - private groups would be the same as the webmaster sees now (author, publisher, administrator), but public groups (examples on my site, North East Club, South East Club, National Club) the user should be able to see and sign up for, with some sort of moderator control to control this sign up only to the relevant people.
The big kicker for this is how components/modules etc interface to this new layer. I'm guessing the Joomla will provide an API and each component will need to be rewritten to query this. I'm guessing that will be outside the scope of the project and will extend the lead time before a site can be upgraded.
This is a vital function for Joomla and I'm sure that the right partner protocol has been chosen, I can't wait to see the implementation!

The other one for me is data categorisation - extending the category tree to multiple levels. While this is of interest to me, much more important by far is the ability to file articles under multiple categories on this tree. While it may not be possible to do this without this extension being created first, I think this is much more important, and based on the forum posts I have seen I would not be the only one suggesting this. I sincerely hope that multiple categories will not be left by the wayside and can be incorporated into this project somehow.

A lot, actually. Just speechless I've heard good things about the program, and I'm glad Joomla is participating in the Summer of Code. I wonder how many "students" they'll take in?

If there are 14 available mentors, a maximum of 7 students would seem to be a nice number.

An official Announcement is pending.

Please note, we only received final confirmation from Google very recently and things like officiall announcements take some time to craft.

hmm, I personally think sql statements, or database creation should be eliminated from the xml in total. just use the install.component.php file to do the queries, this is far more flexible than a xml file (as far as I can tell)

@Daniel. I have heard David Gal mention somewhere that it will be possible to call an sql file instead of having all queries in the XML file when installing a component/Joomla.
