Great Writing - another idea of non-profits?

Hi,
I've been interested in hearing the discussions on what non-profits encompass. I've always considered my Joomla* offering, Great Writing (http://www.greatwriting.co.uk) a non-profit (since we don't make any money doing it) but we're not a charity, it isn't an out-and-out altruistic 'good cause', and it's not something targeted at any particular minority.
I guess this discussion goes to show that the non-profit net could be very wide. Really, any kid running a personal clan site from their bedroom might be classed as 'non-profit'.
Mike
*I say Joomla, although it's really Mambo. Except that it isn't really that any more, since the site core has been hacked beyond much recognition. No easy upgrade path for me
