Hi there

does anyone have any ideas of a component that we could use to set up a community portal in our town. 

The idea is that groups could register on the site and, once approved, submit news, events and discussions on behalf of their group.

Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Very easy to use and many basic features.  If there is anything additional that you need, then you can install Joomla components just as you would for the core distrobution.
