A truly Stupid Question

I can find no where else to ask this - and if it doesn't get answered I won't loose any sleep, but curious minds want to know:

Why "Developer" instead of "Forge"? I mean there is sourceforge (the #1 site for open source software) and there is mamboforge (it's an older cms that used to be popular - you may have heard of it) and there's Novell Forge, and Valley Forge (used a long time ago by the "USA" project developer, GWashington and team), so, why go against the grain - especially when using a product called "SourceForge"?

Perhaps they could add the subdomain forge.joomla.org to redirect to developer.joomla.org? People have already setup projects with links, files etc. using developer.joomla.org subdomain. Still, a redirect might be nice. :)

we chose to use the domain developer as it better represents that it is a resource center for developers.

Beyond IT 'geeks'  :P forge has no meaning to the general public - but developer does.

We wanted a term that was self-explanatory, to the layman.

No comment on a possible subdomain redirect to keep everyone happy ? :)

I'm fully agreeing with Rey (as most of the time ;)).

Developer.Joomla.Org is a great "self-explanatory name" which speaks to the layman. We just need to come up with a short-name for the geeks needing to type quick.

Before we used "MF" as shortname. Now the tendence in forums is "SF" because no shortcut has been proposed.

To start this very important debate, proposing new standard for the short-cut in this forum usage:

"DJO".

I'm sure some talented graphist can propose a logo with that. Maybe something with music and DJ's... :)

This is not something we are going to implement. Links from all our site to the the 'forge' are pretty clear.

Understood. Well, if we do one way long enough it will become the accepted standard one would think.

this bring me to an idea
Why not call the new dev/forge

"DOJO"

Its where martial artist train and develop themself (Japanese, i think). But in our case its where developer train/perfecting/developing their arts

And another stupid question (hopefully related):
Was also wondering why there is no "Download" in the menu. Is this a way for you guys to scare us non-hardcore developers from downloading Joomla? ;)

Well....... perhaps "File Releases" better communicates the fact that a project may have many packages for download, as well as the whole "fixed in this release" and "Reported in this release" stuff.......but that's just my opinion.

(Actiually on a per-project basis a project admin could add a button to the Project nav bar entitled "download" that just links to the main distro in the project...in fact I just did this. Go to https://developer.joomla.org/sf/sfmain/ ... cts.joomla and you will see a button "download 1.0.1" that is linked to the  Joomla_1.0.1-Stable.tar.gz download)

Hi Boomzilla, I'm so sorry I didn't make myself clear. The Forge links are okay as it is (more than okay, actually :) ). I was referring to the main menu on the Joomla site http://www.joomla.org

Yes - so much so that I forgot that I asked it and failed to come back to see the answer! I came across this thread and thought - that's a novel subject title. Hey - that's my title! Doh!

Thank you for all the very fine professional answers to a truly stupid question and stupid questioner.

'nuff said.
