Hi there,

for a research project I'm looking for data on how often Joomla releases/bugfixes/etc are downloaded.

Could you please inform me whether this information is stored/counted, and if not, why not?

Best regards,

Slinger Jansen

You didnt say you wanted to know how many downloads or did i misunderstand you.

Either way the only information tracked on this can be found at http://forge.joomla.org/sf/projects/joomla

Your project sounds interesting.  What sort of project is it, and what are you doing it for?

Alright lady and gentleman, I wanted to use the data for a paper I am working on (actually it's just been accepted) saying that some releases are adopted by users more often than others, and that the software supplier can influence this behaviour. I always use Joomla as an example in my articles (I'm a PhD student) because it's just such a d*mn fine project :-).

One of the claims I made in this article: "When looking solely at version numbers, an open source project such as Mambo/Joomla, has had three major releases since 2001 (4.4, 4.5, Joomla 1; ed.) approximately 10 minor releases, and approximately 120 bug fix releases. These numbers show that bug fix updates are released much more often than major updates. Also, when looking at customer behaviour, they are more inclined to regularly update to a new bug fix release than they will update to a costly major release. "

Do you guys know if these numbers are remotely valid? I found a page stating all major and minor releases of Mambo and then I estimated the bug fixes.

Thanks in advance. An early version of the article can be found:

Please don't link to this, because the domain will soon be used for other things. Also, it's copyrighted material, so I'll have to take it off soon.

Oh, also I'm working on an update tool for Joomla.

Sounds an interesting assumption. The only problem I see at first glance is that in earlier days at Mambo the version numbering system wasnt particulary sophisticated. Since the start of Joomla the version numbering has been far more sophisticated etc and the changelog files should give you a very good idea of what changes from release to release.

Off to read the article now
