Can't stay logged in....

Post by simon_w » Fri Sep 21, 2007 8:48 am

Hi folks,

Does anyone know why I can't seem to stay logged in to JoomlaCode.org for more than a few seconds at a time?  I'm being prompted for my credentials almost every time I click a link.

I'm accepting cookies (i have _utma, _utmb, _utmc, _utmz and sessionHash cookies at present), and I don't have similar problems on other sites, yet I don't see anyone else here mentioning this issue, so I'm guessing it must be something to do with me or my a/c.  ???

Any suggestions?  It's driving me crazy!!

Thanks!

Simon

Do you have to setup joomlacode in a personal firewall or something like that, I have been in JC all day without an issue.

Hi Russ,

Thanks for your response.  I can't work out what it is, but I'm at a different location for the four-day weekend here in Taiwan and I'm not having any problems now.  If I experience trouble again from my regular location on Wednesday I'll keep looking into it, and if I can work out what's up I'll report back.  Clearly it's not an issue with the JC per se, since no-one else seems to have this problem.  Curious though that I have no trouble with any other web sites.  [shrug]

Thanks again!

Well, I still can't work this out.  From this PC I just can't stay logged in, and now I can't access the forge at all - I'm just getting "Unhandled PropelException" all the time...

I think I've done all the obvious things (cleared my browser cache, cookies etc., restart my OS...), but I can't get anywhere.  Works fine on my laptop though...!

It's a mystery, I guess.  Thanks anyway!

Simon, you are probably behind a proxy. I have this problem too... I've reported this here http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,178960.0.html

I suspect it's because my isp's proxy can be using totally different ips. Maybe an admin can confirm if this is the reason.

Thanks sykong, that does sound entirely plausible.  I am indeed behind a proxy at my problem location.  My initial question/report was based on the fact that I've never actually had a problem like this before, with any web resource, in any environment.

In the interests of curiosity, I'll try some other workstations/locations behind the same proxy, and see how I get on.

Hi Simon i had the same login problem last year.. the solution is to keep logging in over and over again. I repeated this 784 times and this seems like the quickest most plausible way to do it. If you have any more questions send me a direct message as i have a real nack for solving problems.
yours sincerely
Garth

Thanks for the tip - I'd previously been giving up at 'round about 782 attempts - d'oh!   You do have a knack!

I'm sure it must be some kind of proxy issue - I am worst afflicted when I behind a generally pretty restrictive proxy/firewall configuration, although the observed behaviour is still not consistent across client machines even on the same LAN.  ???  Ah, well.

Cheers!

For me, I eventually discovered that my problem was caused by an ineptly configured proxy server.  It seems that when the load is high on the server I'm behind, it will reroute through a different ISP.  This, of course, results in my connection reporting a different ip, and the problems are caused by that.  But it doesn't do it all the time, which is what made it difficult for me to diagnose.

Pain the backside, but at least I know what it is now.  For a Joomla! site I control, which needs to be accessed by users behind the same proxy, I actually had to write a really ugly hack into the Joomla! session-setting code to cope with this.

You see the problem is as well, in South Africa we have 3 or 4 outgoing connections to the world
These are permanently changing from say Cape Town to Johannesburg and so on ...

What ive done now is ive run through the National Cache Server, which is a fixed IP ... and poof it works!
