In case anyone missed it since I was posting in the Joomla Day thread, I've currently organized a monthly Joomla meeting in NYC.
Our first meeting was last month at the NYPHP offices. Future meetings will be on the second thursday of the month(so our next meeting is 2 days before Joomla day east)
Please remember we need an RSVP for the meeting for security purposes. I will need your first and lastname, and you will need some form of photo id to get into the building.
Website is still in progress, here are the details:
Date:
October 11th
6PM to 8PM
Location:
Robert Half Technology
245 Park Avenue, 25th Fl.
46th - 47th St.
(near grand central)
After meeting hangout:
local TGIF's unless unless someone comes up with a good idea that accepts scruffy programmers.
Agenda:
6:00 - 6:20 - Gary Mort will provide a review of Community Builder, what features it allows you, where you need to expand it to create a true Community Site, etc.
6:20 - 6:40 - Laura Gordon will give an overview of 2 usefull Joomla Components. CBJuice, which allows for the import and export of user information from Community Builder, and JACL which allows you to grant more fine controlled user level access to Joomla components and Content.
6:45 to 7:15 - Mitch Pertle will discuss the future of JoomlaCities and it's first site, the NYC Joomla Cities site(coming soon). JoomlaCities goal is to allow for a centralized site to give regional Joomla User Groups a place to meet, discuss, and improve their knowledge. As well as a way to give back to the Joomla Community in general.
7:20 - 7:40 - Anthony Ferrara, author of PageCache for Joomla, will give a presentation on developing applications for Joomla.
7:40 - 8:00 - time permitting, Gary Mort will give a review of Template modification of a Commercial Template for a live Joomla site - including how you can develop your new template for an existing site on the live site. This is primarily an overview of the processes involved as well as the features of Joomla that make it easy to have 2 different looks for the same site at the same time(even with different module customizations)
At the moment, you can RSVP to me directly at bz-gmort [at] beezifies.com, subject line "Joomla Meeting" or send me a PMS message through this forum.
NYC Region JUG Meeting

Re: NYC Region JUG Meeting
A last minute substitution, since we have some speakers coming in from out of town, we will be bumping the Template presentation and replacing it with one on designing for Joomla 1.5
Jonah Braun from the Joomla! Security Task Force will present an overview of how to build a native Joomla 1.5 component using the MVC method. Good practices and common pitfalls will be discussed.

Re: NYC Region JUG Meeting
FYI, this week at the Dreamweavers meeting there will be a presentation on open source frameworks including Joomla.
Build a PHP/MySQL based Database-Driven Website Using an Open Source Framework with WordPress, Joomla, ZenCart or Drupal in less than an hour by Consultant Stephen Britton
You can RSVP through the Dreamweavers NY website, http://dream.212917.com/
Their meeting is also hosted at Robert Half Technologies, so the same location for this Thursdays meeting is also used for their Wednesday meeting.

Re: NYC Region JUG Meeting
For the curious, I have 21 RSVP's(counting myself).
So we still have room for around 19 more people without cramming, and an additional 10 or so if we drag some chairs in from other offices.

Re: NYC Region JUG Meeting
Counting down to the meeting, we currently have around 30 people RSVP'd so we can accept another dozen or so.
For this month only, you can RSVP by emailing me at [email protected] (I'll be deleting that address in a week or so as it's already getting spam... heh)

Re: NYC Region JUG Meeting
Just a reminder that the November 8th meeting is coming up.
You can RSVP online through the contact form, http://www.joomlanyc.org/index.php?opti ... &Itemid=11
Or just send me an pms here.
Even if your just thinking about going but aren't sure, RSVP and let me know so I can add you to the security list.
I'll make sure to send out an email next week to get a firmer number(and assuming we're not over the room limit, I won't drop anyone who RSVP's from the list so if you turn out to have free time, you can go ahead and show up).
As usual, meetings are free and open to the public.

Re: NYC Region JUG Meeting
I've sent out an email to all addresses I had who confirmed this months attendance, as well as people who RSVP'd last month but not this month.
I have kept everyone on the RSVP list for security purposes, so if anyone came or tried to come last month they won't be turned away at the lobby.
If you have NOT received an email from me and intend on coming, make sure to RSVP by either sending me PMSl or(preferred) RSVPing through the website, http://www.joomlanyc.org
