Website for lost/found/adopting pets and animals

Post by Elisor » Mon Oct 22, 2007 12:22 pm

Hi All,

www.ExpatPetFinder.com

This is a free site mainly based in the UAE (although it may spread out of there) for pets and animals that are lost/found/need a new home.  It's a personal project and has been "launched" for about a week.  The reception has been tremendous and I'm really grateful to Joomla for providing such a great CMS.

It's uses the following:

Joomla 1.0.13
MarketPlace 1.3.1 (hacked quite a bit to change it from classifieds to lost/found)
PrimeZilla 1.0.5. mainly to make sure email addresses are not shown
Fireboard - 1.0.3
Community Builder 1.1

As I'm new to open source and come from a windows/.NET background it took several Joomla installs and combination testing to eventually arrive at what I'm using.  But I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the quality of the product you guys, and the extension developers, have produced.  Hats off to you :D

Paul.

Hi, Paul ~

Great work on this site! I love how you can post several clickable photos in the details pages. Here in the States we have PetFinder.com, which even encourages shelters and humane societies to post their available pets too. It's a really great resource and I wish you (and your site clients!) great success with this project.

I thought better late than never so here is some additional feedback..

I think overall it's a great site, especially in terms of the navigation which is very clear and in terms of the purpose which I fully support (dogs more than cats though!  :)).

To improve it I would put a photo collage of pets at the top instead of the rather meaningless blue image. Also i would use lightbox for the photo popups, which looks much better than a simple popup window.

It looks like you could use a bit of marketing for the site though. Besides having it listed in relevant directories and search engines I would put a leaflet on the wall of vets in your area - most have a wall board for lost & found pets.

Do you think you could make your modified component available for others to use? I know on the island where I live this sort of site could help people and I would be happy to put it up with a component like yours.

Cheers!
